Default Will my fingers fall off...,

Just found a set of D'Addario Exp 16 in my string box....

No box, just the plastic bag.

Unopened.

No holes in the bag. These strings could be 12 years old, no way to tell...

I took them out of the bag. No corrosion at all.

I took the chance. Strung up the Martin with them.

They sound fine, especially capo'd up.

RIP OP. Thank you for making the sacrifice so that we don't have to.

:-)

I kept a wooden box "Gibson Gauge Kit", from a store I managed 40 years ago.
Inside I accumulated 200 or 300 orphan strings, handy when I test gauges on new instruments. Or for drying chili peppers. Or make a heated saw for polystyrene. Or help unclog a sink.
Any brand known to guitar player are in there (and probably some unknown, too).
Some *very* vintage (50 years...) Black Diamond, Argentine, Gibson, Guild...
Most of them show some kind of corrosion, but not to the point of being unusable (for a test situation), and a few are -visually- perfect, even after 40 years or more. And they come from a period of history when a even the idea of a sealed plastic bag was unheard of. Paper bag all the way.

Sounds like you just put bass strings on your guitar. The trussrod is holding on for dear life in there.

These strings are best paired with a torrified top. Torrified fingertips will help, too.

I just put D'Addario ej26 on my Sigma om-21. They were included in the sale of the guitar and it's the first time I'm trying D'Addario.

When first stung up they were nasty metallic. After a couple of hours they settle in into a bold, rockin & rollin kind of tone for a day or two. But now they are losing that tone and getting mellow. I'll have to see how it goes today.
