Not sure how you are defining 'greatest' but here are three well known names used by some top professionals:

Smallman
Dammann
Friederich

We are fortunate today that there are MANY excellent classical luthiers. Which one is the greatest? I suppose it depends on what is important to you sound wise and other factors. Here is the USA, you'll hear about Richard Brune, Jeffrey Elliott and Robert Ruck as being the best known due to their longevity and artist associations. But there are MANY excellent classical luthiers building superlative instruments. I could list >20 luthiers in North America building excellent concert quality instruments. Different players will likely have differing preferences.

My $.02

Kenny Hill's name pops up from time to time and I would also list Jim Redgate, who has already been mentioned. And I would imagine Ramirez is in the mix.

Best,
Jayne

I saw an early 70s Friederich with an asking price of 40K recently. What does his new ones go for?
