Taylor 614ce or 814ce
I am buying another guitar and am trying to decide between these two. I like both of them. Which would you choose and why? Price is not a concern.

The rosewood GA is a all around good guitar ,you get some nice vibs. out of this model .but it take awhile for it to come into its prime ,they need a lot of playing to open up.

I think you need to decide how you plan to use the guitar. You'll be happy with either one. I was considering the 8 or 9 series before I bought my 614 this year. Before I made my choice, I stopped to think why I was buying another guitar. I realize that I had a Guild rosewood dred that I had just had professionally set up which improved a great guitar more than I expected and it still wasn't the sound I wanted for the direction I was taking musically. I started seriously studying jazz and while I love my arch top, there's something about the acoustical jazz sound that pulls me to it. The first time I tried a 614 the sound spoke to me when I started playing jazz progressions and runs, almost piano like. It was the sound I was looking for to express my musical direction. If you read any of the threads from Styxx on this forum, you'll note he is very impressed with the 614 for recording and playing out. Another issue to consider before making your decission.
On the other side, I have tickets for Simon and Garfunlke this month so I've pulled out some of their music and "The Boxer" and "America" just sound right on a rosewood dred. What this tells me is there will be another Taylor in my future. What I think you'll find, is you need to make a choice for your current musical style and just know the GAS and/or TAS will eventually lead you to the one you don't buy this time. Mark |

I voted on the poll, but I have already voted with my pocket book as I have the first right of refusal on an 814ce Fall Ltd. The opportunity to get a Brazilian 814 at an affordable price is just too good to turn down. I guess my preference in guitars is toward the mellow side.
I love the 914ce that the dealer has hanging on the wall. In reality it is more money than what I will pay for the Brazilian 814 Fall Ltd. More bells and whistles on the 900's. The combination of Rosewood and Engleman is hard to beat though. So now I wait until the dealer gets the guitar. And, I leave for Costa Rica for three weeks on Thurdsay AM. My Luck the 814 will arrive on Friday. Oh Well. The deposit will hold it. I have played a lot of the Fall Ltd's and the 300's in maple are a real bargan. I would love to get a 314 Fall Ltd but like my signature block says I would have to sleep in it. My wife has approved the 814 purchase. Whew!!!!

Depends on what you've already got!
You've gotta have a rosewood guitar, for the resonance and depth of tone- if you don't have one already, then the choice has gotta be the 814; I have D-28 that I'll never part with! However, if you have a rosewood already, a maple 614 will "cut through the mix" soooooooo well that it'll make a wonderfull addition to your "quiver", and fill in that fingerpicking soft spot! The red is awesome, so's the blue, but a natural quilted has stolen my heart! I'm looking at a sweet used, quilted 614CE that if I can only get the keeper of the checkbook to turn it loose I'll have in short time! keep on pickin' tony |

I do not have a rosewood at the moment. I really like the bright sound and looks of the 614ce, I may go for that one.

shane,
i'm currently looking at a used 614CE myself, so i understand why you're tempted! i'm lucky to have a rosewood '73 Martin d-28, and although i love her, i'm wanting the crispness of that 614! best wishes and either way, you'll have an amazing guitar that will never fail to please you! tony |

I recently A-B'ed a 614ce and an 814ce at GC in Tempe. My vote would definitely go to the 614. It's got a crisper tone and a much faster response. I suppose it depends on what you like. I'm more of a rocker and the 614 speaks more to my personal style.
Both are really nice, however, and I don't think you'd go wrong with either.

Don't worry, Shane. I played a 614ce daily for a couple years. If you really use the 'ce' part you'll appreciate the plugged in sound. Nice and crisp. Acoustically, it'll be a little more balanced and, I found, a bit quieter than a rosewood/spruce box.
You made a good choice. Of course, neither one would have been bad. RfM
