Default OM Guitars

I am a old folkie, I have a Gibson SJN C/W model 1964,which I bought for £148 Quid

I am now looking for a OM folk shape guitar or parlour, I also have a Farida M-26 parlour which is kept at another location.
I tried two Tanglewoods at DV Barnet a trp 73 and a Cedar version both were very bright, too jangly for me. I tried 3 Martins at sound city a OM1 not bad,
a OM1E not good and a 0001x rgt what was very nice but not nice enough to get my wallet out!!
Can any one help me find a all wood OM model under a grand? Cheers
Johnbytheway
PS I bought the Gibbo in 1964!!

Try to find some Guild GAD's.
Also a Blueridge BR-143A would be worth a test drive.

in that price range there are a few asian imports. the eastmans (E10 OM, or E20 OM), and the guild GAD 30 (rw or mah). For a few bucks more, try the Martin OMSW or whatever it is called. it's the cherrywood OM guitar.

Try a Larrivee OM-03 (mahogany b/s) or -03R (Rosedwood b/s). Excellent guitars at a great price. Especially used.

I am with "dmoss74" and "johnbytheway"

Eastman makes a great OM. Larrivee is as well fantastic, if you can take the feel of the neck.

You could look at the Martin 15M Series. It's all-mahogany, in your price range. The 000-15M is the same body size as the OM and the 00-15M is slightly smaller. Great guitars.

Played the 00-15M yesterday, definitely recommended. Great tone.

I "third" the martin 15 series. Very folk tone similar to the 17 series of old. I have (and love) the 000-15. I highly recommend the OM, 00, 000, and 000-15S in this series depending on what you are looking for exactly. Very fundamental and earthy tone. Kind of hard for me to describe, but it just hits home for me personally. Used examples can be hard for hundreds less than your max budget.

To me nothing says "old Folkie" like a Guild F-20.

You can get a vintage US built one for under a grand, or a new GAD Chinese built one for somewhat less than that.

Hi John,

I am an old folkie myself. I own two guitars that I could recommend to you -- 1) Guild GAD30R, pretty, good tone, I had to do some setup work on it, but now it's great to play; 2) Voyage-Air OM-04 for about half of your budget top end. It has a solid spruce top, laminate mahogany back and sides, sounds good, I put a bone saddle in my OM-06 (now replaced by the OM-04) and it sounds even better, and it comes with a carrying case. The guitar has a folding neck so you can carry it on an airplane, but when you unfold the neck, it's a real, full-size guitar. Both of these guitars give me about ~75% of the sound quality I can get from my Santa Cruz OM/PW, which is 3 times your budget.

Regards, Glenn

+1 for the Larrivee OM03R; as an ex-owner I can tell you simply can't go wrong with that.

John, I recently bought an Eastman E 20 OM from Ivor Mairants in London, & am stunned by how good it is - I've owned a Larrivee OM 03R in the past, but far prefer the Eastman - I can't imagine a better buy in the UK; Mairants have also had an E10 OM ( mahogany ) on their website, at a pretty good price - definitely worth checking out..

Try Blueridge Guitars. A lot of bang for your buck.

I tried a larivee yesterday. A small parlor guitar and I felt like I was back in the 30's. Very nice guitar.
