There are really two types of strummers:

1.) Pickers who like to strum sometimes.
2.) Strummers that might pick occasionally.

They usually (but not always) approach a strumming guitar from different angles. I'm a strummer that sometimes picks a little. For me I like a mahogany backed guitar, rosewood gives me too many overtones and the sound gets jumbled. I like a spruce top / mahogany backed guitar because the notes sound sweet and seem to decay more quickly. I love my J-45 and it's a beautiful guitar strummed, but for the last few years I've been favoring 000 size guitars. They're much less boomy and mic easier in my experience. My current favorite is my Martin 000-17e and it gets the majority of my gigging time.
