The best sounding acoustic I've ever played is this 1941 Martin D-45 I had the honor of playing at Gryphon Stringed Instruments in Palo Alto, CA.

A 1947 D-18 the first chord I hit was an open G and and it stopped me in my tracks.

a thought
Can't lay all the praise on the guitar. Strings? Setup? Intonation? Room? They all matter and they all exist outside the decal.

1934 D 18. It had a top that was sanded down and a French polish was applied. It was the best sounding Martin guitar I have ever heard. I am sure there was a better one out there. I just haven't Heard one.

My 2011 McPherson Camrielle. Here it is being played by someone a tad bit more skilled than I. ;-) I've played some really fine acoustic guitars at church and gotten compliments. The first time I played this I had people telling me it is the best they've heard. I agree both plugged and unplugged. Matt McPherson knows what he is doing.

I own 2 Martins and a Santa Cruz but one of the best and most memorable guitars I played was a Taylor 322ce in Blackwood. I should have bought it.....

Not sure if I’ve posted here on this. Elderly had a 54 or 56 Martin D18. That was all I was looking for in a dread. But , lack of cash and necessity was the issue.

I play a bit percussively, as I'm a looper fan with my Boss RC-50. When Phil allowed me to play his Langejans, I played one of my songs called the Promise, which uses a partial capo over the 3rd, 4th and 5th strings to simulate an open tuning (EBEABE). I would say the response of Phil's guitar was just fine to my style. He likely plays them even more driven than I do.

Two outstanding ones come to mind: a Huss and Dalton pilgrim dread, and my own Martin 00-28VS.
I don't know what fairy dust was sprinkled from a unicorn's horn through a rainbow on a solstice to make it so, but both were just magical, and I am happy to have one of them for my own.

I've just been thinking how good mine sounds with a new set of D'Adarrio 80/20s.

A few standouts for me, but all very different:
A 1938 D-18: woody, warm, and clear as a bell My previous guitar- and German/Maple Olson Jumbo: balanced, sweet, and full My current guitar- Greenfield G2 Fanfret in Moonspruce/Reserve Grade Indian Rosewood. Just perfect. Fat complex trebles, clear and vibrant bass that explodes out like a canon, and just an overall lovely balanced richness to the complete sound. Insanely good intonation in all respects, even in the wildest altered tunings. And setup and playability like butter. It was like driving a ferrari for the first time the first time I picked it up. Michael is a wizard. |
