There are a lot of things that can affect the weight but don't change the sound. It's not so much what the weight is as where it is on an acoustic.

Overall mass may be more reliable as an indicator on solid body guitars, particularly when it comes to sustain. But even that's not gospel: the Parker 'Fly' guitar had decent sustain at only 2-1/2 pounds, thanks to extensive use of carbon fiber to enhance the stiffness.

For a second I read the title of this post as, "Why no guitar weight in space?"

More and more people are interested, at least in respect to electric guitars. It's been important to me for years and I would say on average about 1 in 10 (or fewer) ads would list the weight in the past. These days it's more like 1 in 3 and very much appreciated.

I hear people talk about weight more with electrics. There seems to be more variation with those. I don't keep weights on mine. I just know what feels heavy and what doesn't. My Tele and Duo Jet are relatively heavy. My Strat is lighter and the Danelectro 59 NOS is lighter still. My daughter likes the lighter ones, so she plays the Danelectro when I teach her.

People are also concerned about neck dive. The SG is notorious for that (I don't have one but I've held and played one). Be sure to hold the guitar or a similar one in your hands before buying it. To me, balance is more important than weight.

Of my acoustics, I would say that the Martin 000-15SM is the lightest (and thinnest).

This whole weight thing got crazy in the electric guitar world. There is so much mis-information, myth and BS about weight.
Like with any guitar, acoustic or electric, you got to play it to judge it. The sound, feel and yes the looks is more important to me than weight.
Of course a 9lbs Strat is not what I want, but it would make no difference to me if a Strat weighs 7.2 or 7.6lbs. But in the electric guitar world many people go crazy over 0.1 lbs more or less.
I hope the acoustic guitar world doesn't go as crazy with weight.
