I keep my 12 in Open G, and my 6's in Open G or DADGAD because I like the sound better. The reduced pressure is just a bonus

Mine has always been D to D, partly because of less string pressure on the neck. But there are other reasons.

It's nice to have one guitar tuned lower for those songs which are written just too high for comfort.

And, think of it, what makes a 12 string sound different? It's the 4 sets of strings tuned to octaves. They are the lowest 4 and that's where I prefer to play melody. Tuned lower and the characteristic 12 string sound is enhanced - to my ears anyhow.

Lastly, when I play up the next if I tune down 2 fret's worth instead of one, the position dots come out right and I am less likely to get lost. (There's a confession for you.)

Hi all…
This thread started 11 years ago.

Perhaps there are new-to-12 string folks around.

Tuning a 12 string one half step down

Another 'Lazarus' thread. Cool.

Been playing 12 string guitars since the 60's. Used to tune them to 'dD' back in the day. Old habits die hard, and I now tune down a semi-tone to 'd#D#' in A-440 standard. Currently have four 12 string guitars, two Taylors, two Guilds, for 3 Jumboes and a Grand Orchestra, which is a bit of a super-Jumbo with it's slightly wider waist.

Get a good chromatic tuner and expect to make two passes to get your tuning correct.

My take on "Tuning a 12 string one half step down".:

I've not had to re-set a neck on any of them.
This tuning also helps my old hands.
This tuning gives an extra bit of 'growl' to the sound.
I refer to it in sharps, mostly because it seems to be easier to distinguish intervals, and that's how my mind works.
Besides, 'flats' are for tires.

Be well and tune well,

(_o)===###

Don
