Default Ancient Kauri - Man it's beautiful...

I was wondering if there are any other lovers of Ancient Kauri here? This wood is an amazing 30,000 years old. I think it’s just drop dead gourgeos. I have a uke and guitar from Laurie Williams (www.guitars.co.nz) which is made from it and they’re both just stunning. He does some amazing things with it and man do his instruments sing.

Here are a couple pictures the beautiful back...

More photos of the guitar...

Sound clips to come

I'd love to see some of members Ancient Kauri guitars too.

Kindly,
Danny

P.S. Laurie just had a movie come out in New Zealand. It’s called the “Song of the Kauri." While it's not available here in the US yet, I hope some of members in New Zealand can check it out.

The only encounters with Kauri b/s I've had is out at Robin's shop in Nashville. Laurie sure does build some incredible guitars. That looks like some serious white bait. . .

Danny. That's unreal looking wood and craftsmanship! If I had a guitar that looked like that I might stop playing and just sit it out to look at. Now I want to hear it!

Thanks, everyone!

Steveyam, It's hard to say what it's qualities are exactly. Laurie has so much to do with the sound of the guitar with his voicing methods, swiss spruce top, etc. But I will say it's the clearest guitar I've ever heard. Every note is there, completely present, full, round and clear. It's awesome.

Dennis, you're welcome to stop by anytime you'd like to play it! Give me a call or email me and we'll get together.

Kindly,
Danny

Danny,

How can the wood be 30,000 years old, just curious, why didn't it either rot or fossilize?

Just curious, it is interesting................

That's a great question, Rich. From what i've been told it was buried underground in such a way that preserved it. Here's a wiki article but there's a ton of information about this wood out there,http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ancient_Kauri

From what I understand the current standing and living Kauri trees are protected.

Kindly,
Danny

Here's the the story, it's preserved in peat, just under the surface:

Here's a video clip. It's recorded with a Blue Snowball mic direct into iMovie. I hope it gives you guys an idea of it's amazing sound...

What's wild about this guitar, if you stop to think about it, is that the wood was already 28,000 years old when Jesus Christ was born. It precedes all human civilization as we define it: it's older than the Pyramids, older than the city-states of Mesopotamia, older than the Shang Dynasty in China, older than the human presence in the Americas.

It might be kind of a burden, in a way, because you wouldn't want to play anything on it that seems frivolous or inconsequential.

Like, "I'd better not play any songs by The Archies on this guitar."

No telling what might happen if you did.....

Hey Danny,
Your guitar looks fantastic, and I really enjoyed listening to the sound clip. It seems to have great resonance and a reverb quality, but still articulate.

On another topic, I just noticed from your signature that you're in Nashville. I wish I would have remembered that when our family was there last March.
