I've had two Backpackers. Both broke, and due to the low initial cost of the guitar, repairs are not worth it. The portability of the Backpacker is excellent, the playability is horrid.
My advice: The backpacker is great for one purpose, and one purpose only: actual backpacking, where every ounce counts. For any other travel purposes, camping, etc. I would not recommend the Backpacker. I use my GS Mini for those needs, and it's perfect. If it was me going on a cruise, I wouldn't hesitate taking one of my nice Martins. I've flown with my 000-15sm many times with no issues. I would not submit the guitar (in its original case) to the baggage belts, of course, but I've never had a problem either taking it onboard or gate-checking it. Same for the GS Mini. Gate-checked it multiple times, with no issues whatsoever.
