Everyone is doing it. Taylor's Stella Falone kitchenware series upcycles non-guitar grade ebony and sapele.

Limited to just 25 units and $1,199. I expect the Eastman version soon at 1/2 the price!

I'm always a bit dubious when a company offers an item so far afield of its core product.

It gives the turntable more mass.

I like to think of myself as a recovered audiophile. I used to crave the best sound, often at the expense of just enjoying the music. I'm sure most guitar players can relate a little. I've owned and listened to some very expensive systems and while I still have what most people would consider a fancy pants stereo at my house, it's made up of components that I think do the job with no basis on brand name or price point. As I mentioned, I have a fancier turntable at home but when I got the Fluance for my shop I was more than pleasantly surprised at just how good it sounds. I actually listen to more music at the shop the in the house on most days so it's actually the one that gets the most use and I couldn't be happier with it.

I'm really kind of confused about why anyone would have an issue with this? In essence, what Martin is doing is making a finished piece of wood with their logo on it, then a turntable manufacturer is adding the rest. Unless it's some rare wood, or unless Martin is running out of said wood, what's the issue?
There are collectors who might buy something like this. Assuming any defect is warrantied by the turntable maker, it should be fine. Auto and motorcycle makers offer such things, as do bicycle manufacturers and gun makers, and really lots of other manufacturers make momentos like this. Again, if it's stealing wood away from their mission, then that would be bad. If it's not, then it probably takes them all of an hour or two to make these turntable pieces.

IMHO, the turntable, a (relatively) old-school method of conveying music to the listener, can be interpreted as harmonizing directly with Martin's underlying mission, even if it is not the exact mode of conveyance for which they have traditionally been known. I don't know that I think they should go into the turntable business, but as a marketing event, I think it has merit. It's creative and, unlike an advert in Fretboard Journal, which preaches to the choir, it aims to target a new demographic - one that we should all hope will catch the guitar bug. |

Given the white box company has a good reputation in that sector, I have not issues with it. Now, if Martin thinks they can start making them themselves, that when the issues (other than the price) will start popping up. Last edited by 67goat; 04-23-2024 at 05:57 PM. |

But he did come up with the brilliant idea to hang a sign that read "This way to the Egress!" to keep patrons moving through the freak show attractions...

One in any kind of condition you'd want to actually use is going to be over $600. Broken ones go for $300. At this point, any vintage turntable will need to be completely rebuilt to be worthwhile. The AR's are good for sure when they're working properly.
