I'd go Bourgeois. You'd get an Adirondack top and braces and individual tap tuning. The Martin's are great guitars too though.

I have never played any of the three, but I've always wanted a HD-28VS. But seeing I already have the HD-28, I wouldn't mind a D-18VS. I think you will be happy with which ever, they are all nice. My choice is the two mentioned.

I tried only one, made of Braz RW and Adi top. Both my wife and I thought it was surprisingly stiff sounding. It was a beautifully made guitar. I played it only fingerstyle and never used a flat pick on it. I do not claim to be a Bourgeois expert; I played only this one. I was interested in Bourgeois because of what I heard from Ron Block (Union Station) backing up Alison Krauss. Maybe I played one that never had a chance to open up -- who knows? My experience may not be typical at all. Obviously, Bourgeois is well thought of on this forum, so I have, many times, wondered about that negative experience and wondered, what happened? You know what? I'm not a fan of V-necks. They just don't feel that comfortable to me. If I want to play a V-necked instrument, I'd put the guitar away and pick up a banjo.

Which Would you Choose?
I heard the D18Vs has a chunky neck.. nah
I never played a Bougious.. not fair to say Hd 28vs I tried a used one at a shop one time.. there were maybe 100 other guitars in the room. I never played an Hd28V before, i gave it a few whirls. i was stunned! I swear the other guitars in the room started humming in harmony at the same time! A couple guys came running over asking what guitar i was playing... we all looked it over and i broke out with wildwood flower and all of us were spell bound. So... Hd28VS I still think about that guitar! I dont know how they did it but the guitar was pure magic! |

Winner. No V necks for me either. I'd rather have a handmade Bougious over a factory Martin anyway.

Very different guitars and different woods, better is up to the individual, you best is not mine is not the next guys.
I love the sound of 12 fretters but I use all 14, so I would go with the Bourgeois, but that's a personal preference not because it's "better", my favorite Bourgeois is the Country Boy Deluxe.

Don't have much experience with Bourgeois, but the one I heard, a Country Boy, was one of the best sounding guitars I've ever heard. Lush, lovely.

Martin makes good guitars but Dana's folks build good ones too ... on a more consistent basis.

Not having played either Martin and going strictly on past experience, I'd choose the Bourgeois.
