Default TRS/XLR Cables

Howdy,

Since I had my 414CE I always used the supplied TRS/XLR cable.

Apart from maintaining a clean signal if you use a very long cable, are there any other reasons to use a TRS and not a standard tip-sleeve cable?

Are there any losses in the quality of the signal?

When I record I don't need a very long cable, so I'm wondering if aren't there any problems using a short standard cable.

Plus, I'd like to use my pedals, and they haven't XLR inputs.

Thanks for your replies.

There is volume loss, but I actually preferred the TS cables when I had my ES guitars. Not only that, but you don't have to worry about plugging a TS into a system with Phantom Power turned on.

Juan,

There have been quite a few discussions on this subject - and I think the concensus is that you need to go to Radio Shack and buy an adapter for your TRS/XLR cable - this will convert the signal to a standard 1/4" jack for use with your pedals - but maintain the sound quality you like with the TRS cable.

From a post by Joe F: To have the benefits of the balanced cable (Strong clean signal, low noise), you can use an XLR balanced to 2 conductor unbalanced matching transformer, sometimes called a "little imp". 15 bucks at Radio Shack.

Ditto - that is what I am using into a chorus box, then a direct box and into the board, and the signal is strong and clean...

Thank you guys.

I think I already have such an adapter that I bought to connect a microphone to a 1/4" jack input using an XLR cable.

Unfortunately the links you provided don't seem to work, but I get a very useful answer.

By the way I noticed that while the other guitars (a Guild F47MCE w/Fishman Blend Pro and a Martin D-35 w/Fishman Rare Earth HB) I used at our church had to have the volume fully turned to get a decent signal, with my ES equipped Taylor I have to barely raise the vol knob to 9 o'clock to be more than enough heard in the mix.

Very powerful.
