Default What are your goals as a guitar player?

Just curious. What are your goals as a guitar player? Obviously, there is no right or wrong answer. IMHO, personal enjoyment is just as valid as a hit record and a world tour or to be the next youtube star.

To finish the tune I'm working on and then get a good recording of it (The Sleeping Tune).

Then find another great tune and try to learn that one and get a good recording of it.

Pretty simple.

Write enough tunes to record an album and play shows. Maybe a 1/4th the way there.

1) To not sound like a complete moron.

2) To be able to "just play something" that if I was asked that question, it would be enjoyable for people to listen to. Obviously have a good few items in that list to pull from.

Default What are your goals as a guitar player?

As a singer songwriter, my goal as a guitar player is to create and play strong accompaniments for my lyrics-driven songs. I love strong melodies and rhythms and want to explore how I can use the guitar to create harmonies to convey and express the emotion of the song. To that end, my current goals are:
- playing with employing more partial chords up the neck to add interesting fills
- using drop and altered tunings and/ or cut capos to create more interesting melodies
- becoming a stronger rhythm player by learning more patterns and getting more comfortable with syncopated rhythms.
Best,
Jayne

Smile Goals are good

Hoping to play till I die….

Worth a try, and so far so good! And it would be nice to remember at least most of my older compositions! Hahahaha

My goals right now are simply enjoyment, and also the joy of teamwork (accomplishment?) when playing in a band.

Well DethWshBkr,

#1 is entirely up to you,

but for #2, To be able to "just play something" that if I was asked that question, it would be enjoyable for people to listen to.
May I recommend the perfect response:

Quality tone and mechanics. Sound professional.

I don't want to be in a band or play gigs. Just play for enjoyment. I find it to be very relaxing and it's the longest I've ever stayed consistent at a hobby. Best decision I ever made during lockdown.

Kind of like TBman, but I also enjoy reading/studying about music and would like to keep improving my arranging technique.

Record all my original songs. There are about 20 of 'em. I'd like to keep writing more.

Increase my repertoire to 1000 songs. It's arbitrary and silly, but I'd like to be able to play Ron Hynes "Man of a Thousand Songs" and have it be the truth. I'm at 586 right now. There are many songs through the years that I've performed and discarded, so I've probably played over a thousand, but I want that number on the playable list.

Increase my ability to improvise without sounding like I'm playing licks.

Develop a more dextrous thumb technique with some rhythmic independence.

Get back to playing electric guitar competently.

My short term goal is to be able to play one of the many songs I’m working on in its entirety. Just can’t seem to cleanly get through a song, let alone make it sound musical. A little further down the road, I’d like to write my own arrangements. Then maybe an open mic, if I can find the courage.

mmm, I enjoy nothing (well almost noting) more than standing on a stage alone or with a combo entertaining an audience.
That stopped dead for many years in early 1983 and didn't really start again until 1993, but from 1989, I turned my photography into talks -which was almost as good - often with two gigs a week from September to June.

In the '90s I formed a really good trio, and some duos, and big stage acting. Loved that!

Things come and go, and I did a lot of solo and bluegrass band stuff.

2004 - pneumonia knocked me back for a while.

2006 - Heart failure and surgery knocked the "heart" out of me for a while.

2007 retired and everything got a little better.

2017 - throat cancer and treatment effectively took out two years, and ended my photo talks circuit.

Slowly got my voice and strength back in 2019 started small gigs again.

Got a really nice mini tour of clubs all agreed for 2020. That didn't happen!

I'd run my own small club since 2006 and mostly kept it going despite illness and venue issues (most definitely with the help of my friends!)

I re-opened my club in a much larger "safer" venue last August but got closed down in November.
Re-opened again last Saturday.

I'll be 74 any minute now (if spared). My left hand has got progressively worse due to unavailability of surgery in UK currently.

I'm not convinced I'll be on any significant stages any more.

I absolutely love helping others with my Zoom lessons, and my goal is to find a way to keep teaching and playing - if only I could get the hand surgery done.

My goal upon starting was to be able to "deliver" a song. Later on I added "well enough that listeners might ask to hear another."

Right now my immediate goal is to get my left hand repaired. I'm having surgery on April 1 to fix trigger finger on the index and Dupetrens on the ring finger and pinky.

The index is very painful and wakes me up at night feeling like a broken bone. I even dreamt the other night that the doctor had to make a house call to take care of it. The ring and pinky are just stiff and the pinky is twisting. I really hope the doc can straighten the pinky. And I hope I'll be able to return to playing soon after the surgery.

My other goal is to get my jam group back together. This time I think we are just about there. Also to get back to going to the other groups I used to play with.

My last goal is to keep improving my technique so that I can play songs that I just don't have the chops for yet. I'll get there as long as I keep working at it.
