Years back, my family and I were walking up to the public pool entrance. As we were coming up the sidewalk, there was a loud crashing sound in the branches of the huge tree about 20 feet away. We whipped around just in time to see a small explosion of leaves and debris on the ground by the trunk of the tree, but it all happened so fast we weren't sure what was going on.
When the dust settled, a large hawk was standing there at the point of impact with a squirrel in its talons. As my startled wife hurried our small kids through the gate to the pool, the bird glared back at me, and there was no mistaking its message. "This one's mine. Go find your own lunch human."
