Back in the summer of 2009 I stopped into Griffin Stringed Instruments in Palo Alto, CA when I was down at Stanford U. for a wedding of one of my nephews. I thought it would be interesting to see what the store was like.

When my wife and I walked in they asked, "Can we help you with anything?" I said, "Well, I was wondering if you had a Martin 000-18 Golden Era I could try out?" They said, "We just sold the only one we had, but you might try this Colling OM1A we have, which is similar, for some players, maybe an even better guitar."

So I did try the Collings OM1A and then bought it. I never have had a chance to play a Martin 000-18 Golden Era. The Collings does have a longer (25.4") scale, so it may not meet the OP's needs, but it's a lovely sounding guitar. This was the type of guitar that Peter Huttlinger often played.

I'm not sure if we are discussing just 000 type guitars, but I bought a Guild F-30, so that's going to be a OM type guitar and not quite a 000, but anyway I got one from the New Hartford line and it's got an Adirondack top like the Golden Eras have.

Cost me about $1100, and it does not make me feel like I need any other OM guitar except I would like the same Guild but in the more rare rosewood version.

If you're hungering for a 000-18GE, then the best thing to sate that hunger is a 000-18GE

That being said it's hard to say alternatives really since each brand has their own sound. If you're looking to nail something to sounds very similar to a 000-18GE probably a Prewar GC 000-18 probably gets closer than any other brand.

Saw the CEO7 mentioned somewhere. That is a fabulous guitar

Yes to both! CEO 7 - great balance with just enough bass - who would have thought!
