Default 1962 Martin 00028....PRICE REDUCTION

I deactivated this listing last October as I did not want to ship this 62 year old guitar during months when the temperatures would typically be below freezing in many parts of the country. Spring has sprung for most of us, so I'm reactivating the listing and am happy to ship anywhere CONUS.

1962 Martin 00028 Serial number 189086

This beautiful guitar began as a 00028 C (classical). It was restored to new condition in 1992 by luthier and authorized Martin repair technician, Tom Mathis.

Tom was, at that time, the owner of Blue Bell instruments in Lee's Summit, MO. Tom passed away in 2012. In addition to his considerable lutherie skills, Tom was an inlay artist, creating and hand crafting beautiful inlays on a variety of instruments, specializing in guitars and banjos.

When this guitar came to Tom in 1992, the top was ruined by an amateur inlay, bolts through the bridge, and excessive sanding. Fortunately, the Brazilian Rosewood back and sides were in reasonably good condition, with no breaks, cracks or major faults. The neck was intact and in good condition, but the fingerboard was ruined with amateur inlay work (front fret marker dots in red and white plastic). The bridge and tuning machines were gone.

Tom converted the guitar from a classical to a steel string guitar.

I spoke with Tom on the phone on December 27, 2008, to talk about the restoration. Following are some specs and a recap of the work he did:

** The body and sides are the original Brazilian Rosewood.
** The neck is original and was cut down for conversion to a steel string guitar.
** The neck joins the body at the 12th fret.
** The neck widths are 1 3/4" at the nut and 2 3/16" at the 12th fret.
** The old fingerboard was removed, a 5/16" steel truss rod was inserted in the neck.
** The new fingerboard is Ebony.
** Scale is 25.5".
** The new bridge was hand carved and shaped. It is Ebony.
** The new top is Sitka Spruce and was hand carved for slightly greater thickness on the bass side, creating more response.
** New tuners were installed.
** A new pickguard was installed.

The guitar is inlaid with Tom's proprietary designs. All the inlay work was done by hand and it's beautiful.

A Fishman Prefix piezo was installed in 2006.

The case is a TKL custom fitting hardshell case in excellent condition. There is some fading to the interior lining.

The guitar remains in nearly new condition 31 years after the restoration was completed. It is a very sweet sounding 00028.

I do have Tom's photos from the restoration, photos of some of his other work, and more information about Tom, which I will include in the sale.

My price is now $10,800 shipped CONUS. I will listen to reasonable offers.

I am not shipping internationally at this time. I only accept PayPal for payment and will only ship to a PayPal verified address. I prefer to do PayPal Friends and Family, but if you want PayPal Buyer's protection, and are willing to pay the fee, I will do that.

Note: I am a private party seller, this is my personal guitar and I've owned it since 2006. I'm only selling it because my hands have become very arthritic, and I can no longer play guitar pain free or at my previous skill level. Tom Mathis was the only owner from the restoration in 1992 through 2006.

Please contact me by private message on this forum to ask questions or buy the guitar.

I'm not interested in trades.

Yes, a 5/16" steel truss rod was installed. It is not adjustable.

The neck is straight and has not moved in the 17 years I've owned the guitar.

Wow,
That's a real beauty, koog! I owned a late 50's 00-18C that was a wonderful guitar. Sorry I ever traded it. The guitar I got was cr#p and then some! Beautiful work. I hope it finds a great home.
Regards, Jan 🎸

Sorry for the tardy reply. I was travelling yesterday and did not find the last posting until this morning.

The scale is 25.5 inches.

Beautiful one of a kind guitar…good luck with the sale. I hope you find a solution - or a work-around (tune down a half step or two, lighter strings, shorter scale, no-barre repertoire, slide guitar, etc.) that will allow you to keep playing. I’m having the same issue and am trying all of the above.
Best to you
