Default Have you still wanted a guitar that didn't sound good to you, but is a famous guitar?

There's a guitar that I've played recently at my local GC. I wasn't impressed with the tone, but it's one of the most famous guitar models ever made. So for some reason I still want one! Have you ever wanted a guitar that you tried, didn't really like the sound, but still wanted it anyway?

I don't buy famous or popular anything because they're famous or popular. So, no.

The answer to your question is a resounding, "no!" I don't care how rare or who owned it.

What's the point of having a reputable brand guitar if you don't like the sound and aren't inclined to play it, no thanks.

I have had a couple of experiences where I went to someone’s house to try out a guitar that was for sale. Was very interested and was prepared to buy on the spot if it sounded good to me and felt comfortable. In both cases, the guitars sounded very dead to me. I had brought new strings I was prepared to put on he guitars if this happened. The sellers didn’t want me to put them on. Even tho the guitars were reasonably priced, they were at the top of my budget. Had to pass. I was not willing to take a chance. I am cautious that way in general, and really only knowledgeable enough about guitars to get myself in trouble.

I find that putting new strings on guitars is almost as deceiving as old dead strings as to what a guitar truly sounds like. ANYONE selling a guitar should be putting new strings on a guitar a week or so before they sell IMHO.

I used to be that way. Owned several "famous" models from the big three. Most of them were good enough, none really that bad, but they were factory guitars and weren't as good as my hand-voiced Breedloves. Once I got one of those, the others slowly got sold because I wasn't playing them anymore.

Was it a J-45, D-18, or D-28?

I have wanted iconic guitars but I never bought one that I didn't like the tone.

+1 here !
I buy nice sounds, not a reputation.

Relatives do not mind about reputation when sound is not good to their ears either.

Just to clarify - I wouldn’t buy a guitar that didn’t sound good too.

Did GC have another like it in stock so you could compare the tone to hear which sounded better or not?
