Maybe. I bought a 12 fret Martin D due to my hearing them on Norman Blake records. I had a Mossman that I bought having heard it on Dan Crary records. I would never have heard either where I lived so my exposure was via recordings. It wasn't so much because they played them but the way the sound affected me.

Only in a very general sense, and there is no relationship between the two. I've been playing the same D-28 for over 40 years, buying it back then because it was the best. Tony Rice is probably my favorite acoustic guitarist, but I was playing the D-28 before I knew of him.

Nope.

I play the guitar I got in front of me, not the one in my imagination.

No...I never really thought of that actually. Maybe subconsciously I "recorded" a sound that I liked in my head. It took me many guitars until I found the one that matched that sound.

I must admit I have played many guitars that John Denver has owned/played. Guild, Yamaha, Ovation, Taylor...plus he is the one who got me into playing jumbo guitars.

But he played an all Koa guitar and mine is cedar rosewood.

Hi Daveyo...
Kind of…

I admire a great many guitarists, and my top 3 heroes who inspired me to learn and grow are Bob Bennet, Randy Stonehill, and Phil Keaggy.

One plays Ryan, one Goodall and the other Olson.

I play an Olson.

I don't play the Olson because Phil Keaggy does, but because I played one, and it was life changing and by far the best guitar I'd ever had my hands on. So I spent the next 5 years acquiring one (thanks to the sacrifice of my wife and 4 sons for the last two years to help me save up). It's now 19 years old and still the best one in my little herd.

Back in the 60s and 70s most artists I loved played Martins. That experience has surely influenced my preferences to this day.

Not sure, never thought about it this way, but as many well know artists play Gibsons I guess some of my heros may have also played same guitar. Noel Gallagher plays a J-200 and I admire his songwriting abilities. But this doesnt drive my purchasing decsion.

I bought a Gibson J-45 natural finish specifically because James Taylor played a J-50 (which was basically a J-45 with natural finish) for his first three albums. I wanted to capture some of the melancholy tones he produced with his J-50. But I don't want a guitar model just because James Taylor plays it: for instance I don't like the sound of his Olson - it just doesn't touch me emotionally like his J-50 work. It was the sound, the tone of his J-50 I was after.

There isn't one player I admire most...there are just too many fantastic guitar musicians (present and past).

I'd have an awful lot of guitars if that was a factor...

As far as electric goes, yes. Angus Young turned me on to SGs and Jimmy Page is the reason I play Les Pauls.
