+1 on this. Not a great singer but very good writer and a surprisingly good player.

Jennifer Nettles of Sugarland. She did a bunch of solo stuff pre-Sugarland and is a good singer/songwriter player.

Orianthi. That girl can flat out play and is a decent singer.

Sarah McLachlan

Being Canadian though I thought she played Larrivée - or at least she used to?

Michelle Branch has been a long time favorite of mine.

Emily Osment has written some great songs, and plays acoustic on some of them live. My favorites are "Unaddicted" (not officially released, but can be found on youtube), "You Are The Only One", and "What About Me".

Demi Lovato, Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift, and Mia Rose are pretty good too.

That would be Karen Lafferty, Nancy Honeytree (Henningbaum) and Debbie Kerner (Rettino)

Taylor Swift, duh.
I actually started listening to her music a couple of days ago but in 2009.
She's one of the few of whom I have all the albums, and probably the only one of which my appreciation for the music lasts.

Thumbs up Female Singer/Players

You folks should check out Mindy Smith. Incredible.
Patty Griffin, Claire Lynch, Shannon McNally, Lori McKenna, Amanda Smith, Linda Williams (with Robin)... and of course, the one and only Iris Dement.
I also must include Nancy Griffith, and a lady I've only seen on YouTube, Sahara Smith. Just fantastic. Let's not leave out Mary Black, Shawn Colvin or
Cheryl Wheeler too, and then there's Alison Brown, and Ruth Massey, (The Whailin' Jennys). I must mention Rhonda Vincent and Kate Rusby also.
I know I've left someone out, but there are so many wonderful ladies that sing and write, too bad many live on the East coast, or Europe and don't make it to California. There are at least 10 more I can't think of right now, but at least it's a start. (I know I didn't include Emmy Lou Harris, or Joni Mitchell...and many others).
Blessings fellow pickers, keep 'em in tune!

P.S. Alison Krauss should be included, even though she doesn't "write" per say. She's still the very best in my book, heads above the throng in so many ways.

Richmonder Susan Greenbaum http://www.susangreenbaum.com/ and Charlottesville's Terri Allard http://terriallard.com/ . FWIW Terri Allard's neighbor is Mary Chapin Carpenter and they wrote a song together. I think they're both great, but maybe it's a Virginia thing.....

+1 on Claudia Schmidt. Her Midwestern Heart album is fantastic.

How about Kasey Chambers?
