I suppose if circumstances were such that I HAD to choose only 1 guitar, it would be my HD-28.

My Goodall Concert Jumbo with cedar top and Bubinga B&S, from the early 2000s.
I sold it to Buffalo Bros. in 2009 to help finance my wedding. Months later it was still hanging there and I bought it a second time. As my marriage is a happy one, I don’t expect I’ll let it get away again. |

For me it isn't about sentimental reasons. For sentimentality I wish I had never sold my first guitar (and being a newbie I didnt even realize I got lucky and had a hidden gem of a guitar back then).
But for me I am vociferously attached to my Taylor GC7 which I bought new about 11 years ago - not for sentimental reasons but it plays so incredibly well and sounds so amazing and when I pick it up, I am so familiar with it I play my best when playing it. I own 7 acoustics. I would trade all the others just to keep this one.

So which acoustic guitar that you own is the one you would never part with?

My '64 F212, my mother bought it for me, a late birthday present and a reward for spending several years on cheap guitars, proving I was serious about playing.

I have a 1972 Martin D-35 my father purchased for me new. For obvious reasons that’s never gonna leave. If there was one untouchable for reasons other than sentimental issues it would be my Yamaha LS-36. It’s just that good. My PRS does however merit mentioning as it’s definitely #2 on my list.

I’m fortunate enough to own a few that I would not sell unless circumstances were pretty dire and then it would be a game time decision. Both my Kramer Prairie Grass Bois de Rose and my Wingert deep body grand concert E cocobolo 12 fret are keepers for sure.

Pretty easy I think... My Rockbridge SJ. Most versatile and custom/most difficult to replace.

Over the past few months, it has become my Taylor 322e. It is so much more comfortable and easier for me to play than the HD-28 that it's not close. The Martin sounds better, but it should. It's 4 years older and bigger. I love the Martin, but I can't play it for more than 30 minutes without taking a break. Seriously thinking I need a 000-28 instead.

I was playing my basket-case J-35 yesterday. What a great neck that
thing has! Plus... maybe nobody else would want it ? ... -Mike |

Easy, my '46 LG2 for sure (though I have no intention of selling 4 other guitars I own)
The LG2 is 78 year old beauty that plays fantastic and just oozes vibe that I would never be able to duplicate. It's more like a pet than a material possession. First thing I'd grab if house was on fire!

I'd never part with my Fay... No, and never my Hatcher. Probably not my Goodall either. And since I have only one 12 string, not my Appollonio. And since there is only one wooden-bodied resonator, not the Franks. Though it fills its purpose well, I am not in love with my Blackbird; that could go. And since I rarely play the National, it could also be considered expendable. The Goodman? Probably, even though I am playing it more than any other at the moment. The Sexauer is for sale and the McAllister is being sold, so those obviously could go. That brings me down to 2 or 3, plus the 2 special purpose ones. Will that suffice?
I find friendship bonds with the makers, especially on the ones made to my own specs, those are hardest to break. Besides their value as guitars, there is an additional emotional attachment. Letting the Kinnaird go was hardest, but my arthritic left index finger had changed enough I couldn't cleanly play a couple of commonly used chords: it was time to let someone less challenged enjoy it.

Correction: It's not that I'd never sell it. It just the last one I'd sell. |
