1953 Martin 00-18 - $5,000 shipped - Sound Clips
Up for sale is a huge sounding Martin 00-18 from 1953. This was the year of the "mystery spruce" which contributed to excellent tone from these guitars! This 00-18 sounds way bigger than its body size would suggest and is a joy to play.
Overall the guitar has plenty of bruises, nicks, scrapes, checking and other signs of play wear...but it has remained in very good shape overall, with just one crack on the top that has been glued and cleated. There was also a small hole filled in the headstock, which was likely created by someone in the past who wanted to run a strap/hanger through there. Otherwise the only other major repair was a neck reset and refret. A small piece of wood was added under the fretboard extension near the soundhole to hep with stability of the top given the added mass of the neck shim from when the reset was done. Just helps ensure that the top doesn't get pushed down. Nut width is 1 11/16", while string spacing at the bridge is 2 3/16" and scale length is the standard 24.9". Action at the 12th fret comes in just slightly higher than 3/32" on the low E and 2/32" on the high E, and there's plenty of saddle remaining to adjust lower. Everything on the guitar is original except for the saddle and possibly the bridge pins. No overspray or refinishing, this guitar remains as was when it left the factory (well, plus about 70 years of wear and tear).
