Default Emmylou and Nanci.....

I was just going through some old boxes looking for something else and stumbled across some old film pics of Emmylou Harris and Nanci Griffith.

First - Emmylou and Sam at the '91 Watson Festival (now Merlefest) a few years after we'd met the first time. Quite a lineup that year at the festival, and ticket sales were capped at only 6,000. As you can see, I got some good shots too

And Nanci - probably around '83 or so at Central Michigan University's Erickson Kiva. The format was "Our Front Porch" - a live in the studio radio program with about 120 in attendance. She was so young and so amazingly pure musically. I'm so thankful I have a very high quality recording of that night from the radio transmission.

I've always loved that West Texas accent of NG. There is never any doubt about who is singing.

I’m not really a country music fan but I’ve had a MAJOR crush on Emmylou for the last 40 years. Turn to mush every time I listen to her sing. Not rational, but real.

Nancy is another there I can listen too all day long.

I got to meet her twice.....would have been mid 80's both times. Definitely the only time I was literally week in the knees meeting a celeb. She was incredibly gracious, and I was incredibly silly

I got to meet Emmylou in 2013. She is the kindest person ever. What a sweet heart.

I'm playing at Merlefest this year.

It's a very small slot in the band competition, but it's a slot nonetheless.

That's really cool - I can't imagine how large it is now - I heard ticket sales are capped at like 40,000 or something! I'm guessing they aren't all staying at the Addison!

Nope, not hardly. There are lots of campers.

I'm really thankful for it. It's one of the last things that people actually travel to our county for.

In '91 - the Addison was filled with all the performers, and they'd open their doors and stay up late playing. We'd wander around and listen to them.

I also won a "lottery" to see a taping for the Smithsonian in the theater at the college......Doc Watson, Pete and Mike Seeger, Steve Kaufmann. There were about 50 of us in attendance and it was so cool watching that happen.

At one point Ralph Rinzler asked Pete Seeger to repeat a riff he'd just played on his banjo, but SLOWER......Pete looked up at him and said "Son, that's like fallin' off a table slow!" I'll never forget that!

Here's a cool pic of Pete I got that year on the main stage.....
