Default Gibson SG Special Help

Do you think this guitar is a good buy? I like the faded brown, and it's an open box, and from the pictures, it looks perfect.

https://reverb.com/item/6299436-gibs...igbag-open-box

What bothers me is that he's had it listed for five months, and I thought "used" SG's move quicker than that. What am I missing?

The faded sg is my favorite sg, and I’ve owned a three other models. The satin necks are wonderful and I love the tone from the stock pickups.
That said, I’ve never payed more than $450 for the three faded SGs I have bought, and two of them had hard cases.

Hi Jerry, that's a 2016 Faded series, not Special. For a point of reference, the 2017 SG Faded can be found new for only $130 more at MusiciansFriend, and that's without any coupon which you can usually get.

How do you know it's been there 5 months?

Wow, I need to let you do my shopping for me. I've not see any online for those prices.

OK. Where do you get these coupons?

Reverb says when items were listed, right above the picture.

MF usually has 10% or so coupons available. I've read lots of comments where no coupons are available online but a phone call fixes that, even if the coupon isn't related to that manufacturer.

Are there any SGs available in your area used?

Local stores around here ask premium prices for used guitars. My favorite independent shop (as opposed to GC) right now only has Epi's.

Best deals are always craigslist or another independent seller place. Any music shop will have to mark it up from what they payed for it, though typically have some wiggle room.

They are great guitars. I love the feel of the finish as I’m not a big gloss neck fan. One of my bands, about ten years ago, recorded almost every guitar track on our album ona brown faded SG. The amusing part was we had several Rickenbackers, USA telecasters, a Les Paul custom and various other guitars sitting around to choose from....but the tone of that sg just killed recorded.

One of the major selling points for the hardcore SG crowd - and the very reason I bought my first-run '61 RI back in the mid-80's - is its association with Gibson's "Slim Taper" neck profile; this one's got a '59-style "rounded-C" neck - great if you want a lightweight, genuine Gibson solid with that feel, but out of place here IMO...

The link to MF that Dru posted above says about the neck:

"A set of 490R and 490T humbuckers with Alnico magnets delivers historic SG tones, while a slim-taper neck with a thicker rosewood fingerboard and 22 polished frets combine for an amazing feel in the hand, yielding easy bends and lightning-fast soloing—an impressive value for a high quality made-in-USA Gibson guitar."

Do you think the neck on the one I posted from Reverb (a 2016) would be any different from the MF (a 2017) neck?

Call me confused.

Polished isn’t the same as the high gloss finish. It is also meaning the fretboard I assume. I was referring to the back of the neck (sorry). To the best of my knowledge specs should be the same on all Faded SG models.

My post that you quoted was in reference to Steve's about the slim-taper neck, not the finish. Again, I'm

The newer ones have the Slim Taper neck; I've played the older versions and they have the aforementioned '59 rounded-C profile - perhaps one of the reasons they've still got them in stock...

Please define "newer ones" and "older ones".

Older - 2015/2016 (possibly earlier ones as well, but those are the years I'm most familiar with)
Newer - 2017 and later
