shipping a guitar amp...
yes i've read other threads on this subject.
I'm visiting family in DC and called a few local shops and none of them have amp boxes available. Does anyone in the area have any suggestions ? I've read its not a good idea to use regular shipping boxes is that accurate ? Its a good sized Mesa Rectafier amp- about 23 X 18 X 6 thanks- Jonathan

I have shipped many vintage amps and the best way to ship them is to double box them. You may want to remove the tubes and wrap them in bubble secure them to the bottom or side of the cabinet with tape so they do not bounce around . I buy shipping boxes that are slightly larger than the amp and cut them to size. I wrap the amp in bubble wrap and place it securely in the first box and tape it shut. Nothing should be moving around. Then I use newspaper and scraps of bubble wrap around the first box and put it snuggly in the second box and ship it. Newspaper usually works best because it does not compress like styrofoam and bubble wrap. It will take a couple of good hits. The reason I double box is to protect the grill from sharp objects. With newer amps you can use one box and hope nothing sharp hits it. Older amps need two boxes. Styro peanuts are useless and they make a huge mess.
