I play mostly fingerstyle.
But I have half a dozen in each case, and a crap-ton in my guitar tool box...

This is pretty much all that gets used now:

I have one of the blue chip heavy picks and it is really the best IMHO. Also like the Wegan picks and they are fairly cheap.

I probably have about ten to twenty at any given time, plus about 6 thumbpicks.

I just buy them by the bag. When my supply runs low, buy another bag.

I've got about 100 new picks from Strings and Beyond orders. Mostly Dunlop. I also have another 100 new cheapies. A bunch of used ones on my table.

Can't tell you how many cheap picks I have, but I could tell you to the nearest pound weight!

My "working" picks are in the guitar case in a Princess Mary box with an Intelli tuner and a Shubb capo. For dreads - 1x BC Tad 50, 1 x TAD40, and 1x Wegen TF120.

12 string needs 1 x TAD60r3 and 2 x Wegen TF140s.

For Dobro and National guitars the tin I use is deeper and contains 2 x slides and two sets finger picks and finger picks.

In short - carry all you want in your case take it out when you play, do an audit when you finish to ensure you have all you brought, and don't leave them lying about.

So, I am guessing that somewhere in the universe is a "pick planet", along with "sock planet" where all the picks that get sucked into mysterious wormholes go?

I've still got my favourite pick from the '80s...

While 118 picks and counting seems like a lot to me, I'm sure my collection is meager compared to many others on this forum. So how many do you have? The winner (for lack of a better descriptor) gets the honorary title "High Potentate of Perpetual Plectra".
Are they new, useable or picks you should have thrown away? I have probably 100+ all new picks, of various shapes and gauges that I like, and only about 10 are used but in new condition.

Let's say most of them are gently used, at best. I tend to latch on to a few picks at a time and wear them out. At the same time, I'm always buying a few picks when I go to a guitar store. I may try a new pick, decide that I like the one I'm already using better, and the new pick gets tossed in the jar for future reference. This will all end when I get the nerve to pony up 40 bucks for a blue chip.

Default How many picks does one man need?

I don't know, but I've got a 1 gal fish bowl full of them. After more than 35 years I still haven't found the "perfect" one.
For electric guitar I've been using those purple Dunlop Tortex 1.14mm picks since like '93. For acoustic guitar I've been going with Dunlop's Ultex Sharpies in .90mm and 1.0mm.
I started playing the mandolin over a year ago and don't have a clue what works right for me yet.

I buy mine by the gross if I like them. I have a lifetime worth of picks, the majority being Fender celluloid in various sizes and shapes and colors. For a while I tried collecting vintage picks, but there were too many that interested me and it just got too confusing. Whenever I go into a guitar store, I come out with a handful of new picks. I plan to stop buying picks soon, as I have way more then I could ever use. But I'm afraid that if I stop, I might start buying more guitars. Wait a minute, I already do buy more guitars...
