Default How many picks does one man need?

For a lark, I just went into my various pick jars and counted up my pick collection. I'm at 118, and I'm sure I've got more stashed around somewhere. This plethora of plectra seems a little excessive, especially since I've only got about four or five go to picks. It is, however, a mite cheaper than collecting guitars.

While 118 picks and counting seems like a lot to me, I'm sure my collection is meager compared to many others on this forum. So how many do you have? The winner (for lack of a better descriptor) gets the honorary title "High Potentate of Perpetual Plectra".

Enough so that if I lose one every day I still have more to get me by until my wife collects them back up and puts them on the table.

Do you mean how many are in my wallet, or in my guitar cases, or under the couch, or...

So confused. You keep yours in a *jar*? How strange...

That reminds me - I haven't checked my guitar cases. I'm sure that's good for another 20 or so...

I've used the same flat pick since before last Christmas, and the same thumb pick since last summer (both are Blue Chips). However, I do have hundreds of others of various brands and styles, shapes and thicknesses, colours and materials. I give a lot away, and lots get left here. I also buy picks for my students that have my business logo and contact.

I need enough picks to keep some in various guitar cases, loan to friends, keep in the coin pocket of my jeans, lose between the couch cushions, store a few in the washing machine - and still have at least one left over to actually play guitar! I have no idea what that totals up to, but I tend to buy them in 10 packs mostly.

1 Blue Chip, 3 Wegen, and at least a couple of hundred of the lesser members of this great calling.

Where do you find the time to count 118 picks?? I recently ordered 6 more Gravity Picks in my favorite size and thickness. That, combined with what I have, allows me to have a couple picks in each case, a few in my gear bag, and one on the strings of each guitar. I don't break these, or rarely drop a pick these days.

Back when I was playing in bands, I would go through several Wabash Blue Mediums a night. I bought 'em by the box. I was given a real tortoise shell pick about 20 years ago, and that stayed with my one acoustic guitar (at the time). When I broke that pick a couple years ago, I started on a quest to find "the next best thing." I tried all kinds of picks, made some, then found thicker Gravity Picks. Honestly, I had no idea the difference in sound that the pick contributed.

I've got a lot of picks, but just two types of picks. One is a V-Pick ultra lite small and the others are Fender medium celluloid jazz picks. I like the V-Pick for electric, and I have the Fender picks for when I need more unplugged volume when strumming.

I ordered a large package of those because I invariably lose them, which is why I have so many. But more have been lost to me lighting them when I found out how flammable celluloid is (), than actually lost.

I given away all my inexpensive picks, which was a very large jar over 50 years of playing.

I have two tortoise shells and 5 Blue Chips, all I play, all I need and absolutely make a difference.........

kydave,

Can't tell what caliber the snap-caps are but it looks like they're for a 5-shot revolver…or did you just loose one? (smile)
