Default Here we go again...

I've had this rather pleasant set of Madagascar rosewood put aside for a new project next year.

More to follow in 2015...

Cheers,

Ian

Nice that its wider than required -if you want to get that new growth off of your instrument you have room for trimming it off ( at the center )

What a teaser! The madi looks great, especially the sapwood centre strip. So now you've piquet my curiosity; what are you putting on top, bindings, etc.? Will be looking forward to your posts once the project is underway.

Default Woodset

Can you get rid of the sapwood if you flip the pieces over?

We have to wait until 2015? It's a great preview though and going to make a beautiful guitar. Will you be building it?

Alas no, I do not have the skills. It's a commission which will be happening next year. Once things are underway, I'll start up a thread in the custom bujild section.

I am no luthier, but I love the sapwood in the middle! I think it makes it interesting visually.

For those more "in the know", does that make a tonal or structural difference, or is it purely aesthetics?

another question for those 'in the know' - is the sapwood, (or heartwood as I know it) less strong than the older wood?

i'd be concerned about that seam being a weak link in the overall assembly of parts.

my aesthetic opinion varies each time I look at the wood blanks - it's sure to be a gorgeous instrument when done.

best of luck!

I don't know the answer to the strenght issue but I think from an aesthetic standpoint the variation between the two adds a dimensional beauty to the book match that is superior to the simple grain of the old growth.

From what I understand, the sap wood may be structurally inferior to the heartwood in some cases but that's by no means always the case. A good builder would likely alert you if he or she felt that including that as part of the back posed any structural problems. And there are enough really nice guitars with some sapwood along the back's center line to indicate that sap wood can be plenty strong enough to include, for its visual impact. Some people like the visual effect while others don't. Personally, I'm sort of on the fence. But if I liked it on a particular set of boards, I'd trust the builder's assessment as to whether it would pose any problems. I imagine it depends on the individual pieces of wood to some degree.
