I'm a flat picker who had to double on Dobro, and in a 4 or 5 piece, I had to be able to push out the volume so I used plastic thumb-picks and metal pro-pic finger picks.

Now I am old and my finger nails are thick and strong, so for fingerstyle my nails are fine.

Does that answer your question ?

I have quite a few comfortable thumbpics for fingerstyle, but I have yet to find a thumbpick that is comfortable with up strokes. If it fits tight enough for them it's too tight for comfort.

But I try it a few times and then give up. I suspect if you get the right one and hang in there you could survive. I suppose the real question might be what are you trying to accomplish? I use BC, which are not slippery, so for me there would be no advantage to such a replacement theory.

You might try a Herco. They are designed to be more like flatpicks than most thumb picks.

Default Flat pick to thumbpick

You need to try a Black Mountain thumbpick. They solve exactly that issue!
