Default ES and effects

Is it better to run effects:
1: guitar-->effects-->amp/pa
or
2: guitar-->amp/pa-->effects out-->amp/pa

Also with choice 2, is it better to use the trs cable or standard 1/4" cable?

A couple questions...:

1. What type of pickup system are you using? Are you using a Taylor equipped with ES?
2. Are you using floor based effects (e.g., stomp boxes) or rack mounted effects?
3. Do you need access to the effects during the show, or do "Set and forget" your effects?
4. What kind of setup do you use or are looking to use (Amp, mixer, PA, etc)?
5. How long are your cable runs -- 20 ft. or longer?
6. How picky are you in regards to sonic purity?

These are all factors that will come into play when answering your questions. Looking forward to your reply!
