What do you consider the quintessential jumbo?
When I think dreadnaught, I see a D-28 or a J-45. When I think OM or OOO see an OM-28 or 000-18.
When you think jumbo, what do you see? |

Two guitars come to mind.
First, the iconic Guild Jumbo 6 or 12 string. Second the Gibson J-200.

Guild F-50. I associate those with John Denver back when I started playing guitar. All my other heroes played dreadnoughts or Ovations (early to mid-70's).

I think of a Martin J40 but only because I own one.

I was afraid to mention a Lowden O because then I'd have to come up with body dimensions, and then they wouldn't be those of a "real" jumbo and then I'd get defensive trying to justify my statement. |

Easy. The original Jumbo, designed by Ray Whitley, who co-wrote "Back in the Saddle Again" with Gene Autry. He brought it to Gibson to make the guitar, which has his name inscribed on the headstock. Made spruce over rosewood B&S in the late 1930s before WWII, spruce over maple B&S in standard production after the war. That original J-200 resides in the Country Music Hall of Fame. The nomenclature comes from the Cost, which was originally $200.00, married to the 'J' for Jumbo. Mine is a later model J-200, but it does have the spruce over rosewood back and sides body. Here's a couple of guys name Mark and Chet fingerpicking rosewood J-200s duet style: "I'll see you in my dreams" and "Imagine" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5wTVLIZaxMk Don .

Gibson and Guild. Equal IMO, but I would have to concede the edge to the SJ-200 just because of the exposure and popularity.
Oh, and let me give a very honorable mention to the J-185!
