Personally I think GS minis feel like toys next to full size guitars. If you can find an OM-15 or custom 00-15 with 1 3/4” nut, you have a fingerstyle delight.

Don’t know about the best, but I’ve had a hogtop Larrivee L05 and a 90s vintage Martin 00017s that I really liked. My neighbor had a 60s vintage Guild hogtop that was nice too. Always like to have one. Current resident is my Santa Cruz PJ. It’s a fantastic guitar and really fun to play. Had it at least 5 years and it’s likely to stay here and get played every day for as long as I can play.

I have a 2017 Taylor X braced 324e... a mahogany top paired w/ Tasmanian Blackwood b/s and a "voice" that goes from soft and sweet to huge and full.

Also, I recently played a Martin StreetMaster 000-15M that sounded awesome; woody, full, warm and loud.

While I will always be a little partial of the Martin 00-15, 000-15 & 000-15SM, the best I have ever played have been the Santa Cruz 000 and 00 1929 guitars. They are phenomenal. Crazy expensive, but phenomenal. If I was looking for something more reasonable I would just jump into the 000-15SM. I have regular 000-15 and love it, but I am sucker for the SM version. It just looks better. I do not like the D-15 at all. If I am going for the D, I would jump up to the D-18. It's so much better for not that much more money.

Old thread but a loved subject - best mahogany top....

My best mahogany top tone-wise is my 1944 Martin 0-17.

It has a small letdown and that is the 1 11/16" nut.

So getting a mahogany top with wider nut has sent me crazily down a few paths...... 8 months ago, I bought a new Martin OMC-15ME, part of the 15 series but with 1 3/4" nut, cutaway and the Fishman Enhance pickup system onboard. The guitar is just breaking in after 8 months playing, coming along nicely. I like the enhance part of the pickup through my in ear monitors with Enhance on 11!:

6 months back, I bought the Maton deep body all Australian blackwood 00 - EBW808. The blackwood top gets a similar type of compression thing as the mahogany top guitars, plus it has the world famous Maton AP5-Pro pickup system. This guitar is starting to open out also. Pickup sounds superb. The Maton 00 have scalloped bracing, binding, real dovetail neck etc.. more like a 00-18 than a 00-15....

Years ago on my mahogany top frenzy, I bought a Nation M14 - 14 fret Mahogany top (thick laminated):
Of course, it is sensational!:

Next on the list is the Waterloo WL-14Mh....

As much as all of us hog lovers would embrace the idea of Drake playing an M-20 there's no physical evidence or even first person account of that.

He posed for the album cover with an M-20 owned by the studio owner and the myth has be forever perpetrated. The details of this are documented ad nauseum in interviews with studio personnel, friends, musical partners, and even his parents.

I have a Collings OM2 that is special. It’s the deepest darkest Collings I’ve ever played. And the mix of woody warmth and crisp clarity is unusual and I really like this guitar.

There are pricier all hog guitars and surely the Faith FRMG isn't "best" -- subjectively or otherwise. But it would sure be on my list if I were on the hunt. Huge value and fantastic, not just for the price but a superbly built and fantastic sounding and playing instrument. I actually had mine for sale and just couldn't part with it.

No longer in production, but they can be found.

Very interesting thread. I have wanted a nice hog top guitar for a few years. Kept missing out on the waterloo's I tried to buy and now they are just way to hard to find.

I committed to buy a custom Iris 000 last fall and am on the wait list. It will be a 12 fret, with figured Honduran wood and waverly tuners. Adam is calling it the RCM after one of his valued shop employees.

This, the Martin -15 series has for me been on of the most consistently impressive lines on the market. JMO.

I've played a few of the Taylors, and while I thought the Hog top brought a little more balance to the bright Taylor tone, I havent played any that really seemed to capture the tone that I associate with a Hog top guitar. If you just want a nice sounding guitar they are a good candidate, if one wants that specific Hog top tone IMO they might not be the best option.

Well obviously he played one. How many guitarists do you know who are given the opportunity to hold a guitar...if even for a photo shoot don't play a chord or two on it?

If you can find one, Martin’s Jeff Tweedy model is a wonderful all hog, 00-17. Mine is a forever guitar.

I am glad this thread reappeared on my CP list since I now also own a
Martin OODB and yeah it is great !!!
But it is the most expensive Mahogany top I now own : the Taylor 322
is a bit less expensive I guess.
