alternate tuning cycles
as i play more tunes in alternate tunings, i keep thinking about cycling through the various tunings i use, so that i minimize the strings retuned between songs.
for example, to get from standard to orkney: EADGBE -> DADGBE -> DADGBD -> DADGAD -> DGDGAD -> CGDGAD -> CGDGCD i sure we all do this, perhaps without much planning, or at least to avoid constantly retuning lots of strings, like EADGBE -> CGDGCD -> DADGBE anybody have a thought out system? |

I regularly do EADGBE - DADGBE - DADGAD - DADF#AD - CGDGCD - CGCGCD. Not too painful, and it covers most of my repertoire at the moment.
More often, though, I'll have one guitar going between standard and drop D, one between DADGAD and DADF#AD and one between CGDGCD and CGCGCD. That way I'm never retuning more than one string on each during a practice session which saves time. My Hamblin takes on standard and drop D about 90% of the time, but I have nothing fixed for the others - just whatever takes my fancy.
