Default How do you find Fossils Ivory Mammoth saddles in California?

Will a luthier have those available for customers? Seems like all the vendors online won’t ship to California. I’m trying to get a saddle for my martin OM but have had zero luck finding one. Any ideas ?

Call some of the high end stores. Maybe Schoenberg’s, Mighty Fine guitars, Gryphon. Maybe former AGF sponsor LA Guitars Sales. Maybe organic Sounds Guitars. See if any of them have some ideas, or some to sell.

Is there some type of law forbidding the sale or transport of such things?

Bob Colossi can’t or won’t mail to CA?

I know Bob cannot ship elephant ivory outside of Georgia, but not sure about mammoth ivory. You can reach him at www.guitarsaddles.com

Bob Colosi is the man when it comes to saddles, nuts and bridge pins.

Here is a cut and paste from his site.
Questions Call: (912) 882-1321 -- Ask for Bob!

If I lived in CA I would review the CA Code:

https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/f...&keyword=ivory

I believe Colossi is restricted by GA law regarding elephant ivory leaving the state.

All I know is I have no trouble receiving ivory-laden Martins from CA. Proof of pre-1975 is easily verified by Martin serial number (or lack of SN).

As far as I’m aware, Bob Colosi has never manufactured Fossilised Mammoth Ivory products, only Walrus.

Scroll down to the ‘Ivory Bridge Pins’ section - Bob states that CA is one of the states which he is unable to ship FWI to…

http://www.guitarsaddles.com/pricing.asp

It appears that although he still supplies FWI bridge-pins, Bob no longer manufactures FWI saddles or nuts…

Ask Lindsey Buckingham how he got his. Rumours have it that he used guitars fitted with fossil mammoth ivory saddles for his song, Tusk.

I got my fossilized mammoth saddle from Mary's Music in Pennsylvania.

I know its unique . I know its rare.
Its not a threatened or endangered species.
Its extinct. But tone wise is there a big difference between mammoth and a basic cow bone?? Just curious.

Look around at scrimshaw suppliers on line. Ive never ordered Mammoth, but have gotten good deals on Walrus that way.I don't recall the name of the site I used. They were more about the scrimshaw side of things, but did have a small selection of saddles, nuts, and correctly sized bridge pins.( And a handy chart to match your guitar model with the correct bridge pins) They may have Mammoth available.

I’ve had FWI and FMI nuts and saddles as well as bone. I find bone to be ‘warmer’ than either of the fossilised ivories, and less ‘brittle’-sounding in the trebles.

I choose only bone nowadays.

The usual disclaimers apply......IMHO, YMMV etc.

I have no knowledge of it's tonal properties but I can't help thinking that it's primarily used simply because it's fairly "exotic".

I suppose it's more readily available than Unicorn horn.
