Well, this can be answered two ways:
This was the first song I was every taught to play But this was the song that defined my guitar obsession and the first song I ever played live

1973, I was eight years old and constantly listened to American Pie on my dad's eight track player.

John Denver's song Country Roads had just started getting radio play and a friend was learning the rhythm. He asked me to sing it while he played. After a first time solo he joined me with vocal harmony the second time through. He thought we sounded great together and offered to sell me a guitar and teach me to play. That was 50 years ago and I've never stopped playing.
My late friend Steve is on the left. Thanks for a lifetime of music my old friend, RIP.

I am a little younger I guess. For me it was the entirety of Live at Luther College by Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds.
I was a senior in high school when it came out. It blew my mind. I immediately asked my Dad to teach me how to play. (Funny story - I was at Tone Shop in Addison, TX and a guy next to me started playing the outro to What Would You Say from this album. I started playing it with him. It was also his inspiration for taking up guitar.) |

Honky Tonk on the Beach Boys "Surfin' USA" album. Carl's Jaguar playing captivated me. In fact, I have a Fender 62 RI Jag that I'll never sell, though I rarely play it these days.

Well, it was in high school, well before the internet era...
A nice three chords love song from a great French singer/songwriter from Quebec province of Canada : Les Immortelles / Jean-Pierre Ferland This guy is still alive and working... Then, the guitar arpeggios of The House of Rising Sun.

House of the Rising Sun - Animals version (though a high school friend played me Dylan's version on his first LP - I thought it was rough, not very musical.)
I figured out 3 chords on my $8 sidewalk sale guitar. It seemed close enough. Now I would call my version rough, not very musical. But a good start. Addendum: Dave Van Ronk deserves more credit for this song's fame than is generally given. Last edited by Mirosh; 01-28-2022 at 09:32 AM. Reason: addendum |

FIRST song? Wow, I don't remember, but it almost certainly had to be a Beatles number. In April 1964, the Beatles occupied the top five songs on Billboard's Hot 100:
1: ‘Can’t Buy Me Love’ 2: ‘Twist And Shout’ 3: ‘She Loves You’ 4: ‘I Want To Hold Your Hand’ 5: ‘Please Please Me’ But others have listed the songs I actually learned to play first: House of the Rising Sun (The Animals), Gloria (THEM) and some other easy 3-or-4 chord songs.
