I can’t really remember if it was any song that made me want to learn guitar. A few of my friends and my brother played, so it was something that happened naturally.

I loved Bee Gees songs back then and wanted to play and sing their songs. The first song I learned was “El Condo Pasa”.

I was at a friends house. Maybe 6th grade.

My buddy picked up his dad's guitar, said check this out.

He played the intro to It Don't Come Easy..Ringo Star.

The song hadn't even been out that long.

I made him show me how to do it.

When I went home. I got my Dad's guitar and started my first wood sheading session.

First song I ever played in front of people? An instrumental version of Dazed and Confused. Just me and a bass player.'

Now some 50 years later, I still have to play.

The Tarriers’ version of The Banana Boat Song. I was about five years old, but I remember hearing their opening of the song with what I later learned was a simple run based on a perfect fifth interval. I knew I wanted to do that. After that, things kinda got out of hand.

Mine is a two part answer. The song was 'The Sound of Silence' by Simon & Garfunkel. Turned on my brand new AM radio I received for Christmas, the kind that came with the little single earphone, turned the dial looking for a station and landed on that song. It forever cemented in my mind the beauty of a single guitar and two vocals melding in beautiful harmonies and although I went on to be a drummer and Hard Rock guy, I always had a soft spot for 'the ballad'.

Fast forward about 30 years and I went to see a show with a local band that was warming up a headliner I'd never hear of called Tuck & Patti, a husband and wife jazz duo. Tuck Andress played the guitar like I'd never seen a guitar played and made me want to finally really learn to play the guitar. It took a few stops and starts but that was definitely the catalyst. Once I did start playing I defaulted to the mellow acoustic ballads but I did go with the husband and wife acoustic duo!

'Glory of Love' played by Big Bill Broonzy. I was pretty much messing around with guitars until I heard this at the age of 28. At that point, I knew where I wanted to go: ragtime blues-style picking. I've got into other things since, but hearing that song was a guitar life-changing moment for me. I wanted to do things like that on the guitar.

Garth Brooks.....Made me want to be a singer, I felt I wasn't good enough to be a Lead singer so I needed to learn to play guitar also...
Now it's about 50/50 Singing and guitar
I have moved into a new phase of playing... I'm working harder on the intro's and outros and the general feel of the song which actually help's me "Feel" the song better and I sing it better.

So not just one song...But an Artist

In 1963 my best friend and I were at his house marveling at his older brother's new electric guitar and amplifier. I asked my friend what kind of music his brother was going to play. He walked over to the record player, turned it on and said, "He's trying to learn this song." And wow! The next thing I knew I wanted a guitar so I could make those kinds of cool sounds too!
