I like both...
I prefer story-telling w/o a lot of nonsensical stuff.

However, I do/will make some exceptions if the music/arrangement is great enough. Case in point, "Hotel California" by the Eagles. Now THAT is worthy of an exception. "Eleanor Rigby" is not.

As to something like Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody". . . well, let's just say that THAT song stands alone as something practically indefinable . . . so for that reason alone, it gets a pass, too.

In my opinion, not all, but a lot of McCartneys Beatles, and post Beatles work, is schlocky pop music with mind numbingly bad lyrics. Example from from Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey:

"Admiral Halsey notified me
He had to have a berth or he couldn't get to sea
I had another look and I had a cup of tea and butter pie
(Butter pie)
(The butter wouldn't melt so I put it in the pie)"

There are many more examples even worse than this. Just awful.

But if it wasn't for that schlocky cutesy poo writing you'd never know you're allowed to write whatever you like.

And if you don't write something because of someone else's rules how would you ever be able to let your audience decide if they like it?

The Beatles were only together for about 7 years and had more hits than any band of their time. In those years they were able to change their style of music several times. They wrote Rock songs, blues songs, country songs, and, some styles of their own. In my opinion they have been the best band ever, to date. The best barometer of music success is longevity. 50 plus years so far is pretty good. Any of you that have written songs know how difficult it is to write a great one. They wrote dozens. Start writing people and, see how you do.

Much of their output had acoustic guitar backing. Examples, Norwegian Wood (John), Yesterday (Paul), Here Comes the Sun (George). Many of us have been greatly influenced in our acoustic guitar playing by the Beatles.

I could make the list much longer.

Correction: the Beatles were only worldwide famous for about 7 years (1964-1970). They were together for about 10 years. The first 2-3 years were spent honing their craft.
