Default Mission Impossible

How often do you find yourself in situation when you really want to learn "this song" but your technique doesn't allow you to? For ages now I usually played simple delta blues songs ( I still love it) but today I wanted to learn "Going To California" of Led Zeppelin. This song got a beautiful guitar part that you can arrange in various ways. However after 4 hours of trying I hardly got through the beginning of the song. ( I tried to connect guitar and mandolin parts). I feel I need to improve my guitar playing...

I don't know what tactics you use to learn a song, but I would expect more than four hours for myself to learn something that was different from my typical style.

Maybe start by getting the chord progression figured out.

Then it might be easier to extract the notes you want to play from the chords.

GOod luck!

These are the opportunities that can push your playing forward. Don't count the hours. Relax and keep plugging.

Try playing it half as fast for 8 hours.

Probably took Jimmy Page more than 4 hours to get it down.

I'm just going to keep playing it. I really love the song and the new experience I'm gaining in the process of learning it

It happens from time to time. What's fun is when I put that song away, then run across it again a year or two or three later and find that it's now doable. Progress!

4 hours is nothing. Don't expect it to happen overnight. As mentioned above, Jimmy probably spent much more practicing before recording it.

It is not impossible to achieve good technique - provided you work methodically long enough. Keep on, it will happen.

Maybe the OP doesn't do anything half fast.

It's more than one guitar, you know.

Wait two hours and go try it again. You'll be closer than you think.

Often. Then I learn the song because there's nothing stopping me from doing that but me.

Try it!

Note: sometimes it takes 15 years. So 4 hours is nothing

When I've hit a roadblock like that, I've often sought the aid of a good piano player to help me identify unfamiliar chord voicings. On the whole, I've learned as much about the guitar from keyboard players as from other guitarists.

BTW, that Led Zep song is in a dropped D tuning...drop your E's down to D.

Good luck! Those Jimmy Page open-tuned acoustic things are fun...I have about a half-dozen of these in my regular acoustic repertoire and they always go over very well.

When I hit a wall in a song it means I'm trying to play it faster than I'm able to. Sometimes I have to play so slow on the first day with something new you would think I never picked up a guitar before in my life.

Playing the guitar is hard (contrary to what I've heard some who play other instruments say). You're making progress. You will pull it off if you keep practicing.
