I'm not sure if you saw my introduction post from yesterday, but I was in the same boat, considering a 12-string. Found the Ibanez AEL2012 which should fit in your budget brand new. It has the cutaway, and on-board Fishman electronics, however there are only a couple of videos online about it.
I seriously fell in love with this guitar base on the looks alone, but was supremely frustrated by the fact there is bugger-all video reviews of it online. Not sure if it's what you are after, but it's an option for you.

Hey folks - thanks again for all the advice. I'm now focusing on Guild F-212s in the used market. Resolved myself to up the budget a bit, which also may have to include installing a pickup in whatever I buy. But I did come across something else in a local shop - a 60s-era Epiphone Bard. This one has a trapeze-style tailpiece. I played it at the shop yesterday and it's in good condition, nice low action. But doesn't have a big sound. Definitely a bit more delicate than what I'm after. I am wondering though, whether this will matter as much when plugging in. I also want a 12-string for general enjoyment and potentially recording (with mics, not pickup), so still leaning toward the Guilds but the opportunity to play the guitar before buying is appealing. Thoughts?

Very little more. Like $20 to $75. One of the best guitars going for dipping your toe in the 12 string pool. Superb quality. Arguably at least one of, if not the easiest neck to handle on the market for a first time 12 string owner.

Update - I found a Guild F-212XL Std - made a few years ago in New London - on Reverb.com for a good price and took the plunge. Should be arriving today. Planning to install a K&K under saddle for 12-string. Thanks for all the input. Great community here.

My new to me 2011 Taylor GA-3 12 arrives on Thursday. My first 12 string. I'll probably install a K&K Pure p/u in it.

Seagull cheap and strong.

I have one of these. It might not be the greatest but it plays/sounds really good. And The Canadian woods are strong. I really like mine. Smaller headstock = less weight. I got mine for $180. Had it setup for $50 and have had a good 12 string for years where the neck / action has not moved. |

In terms of bang for the buck, hard to beat a Yamaha LL-16-12. Solid Englemann top, Solid EIR back & sides, ebony board & bridge, sides are braced and has un-scalloped top bracing...very strong; 5-piece laminated neck that will NEVER warp under all that tension. I also like the body dimensions...it is nominally a dread, but somewhat more compact, curvier, slightly rounder shoulders. I got mine used from Elderly for about $650
Only caveat is the smaller replaceable parts, unless they've come to their senses since I got mine. The saddle, nut and pins were plastic junk and the tuners were terrible. I replaced the nut, saddle & pins with bone and put a set of Grover medium 18:1 tuners on it...good to go now. EDIT oops, I see that you found something....that Guild should be a good one too. I always figured that their 12-strings were Guild's strongest suit. BTW, I also see that you're planning to installed the K&K Pure 12-string (which is just the original full-size K&K Pure Western, with piezos the size of a nickel). I tried this in my Yamaha and it was WAY too hot, too boomy. I kind of have it under control now with a K&K Mach II preamp, but I wish I had used the K&K pure MINI piezos and will probably have to change it one day.

Great choice! Had one for a few years, and it has a much fuller sound than any Taylor 12 I've played (which is not a slam on Taylors...it is an endorsement of the Guild jumbo body). Enjoy.

The Guild arrived yesterday and I love it!
Obviously honeymooning but really like the jumbo body size - arguably more comfortable to play than a dread, since it isn't as deep, and even though the strings are light and it's something of a delicate-touch instrument given the nature of the 12-string, the volume and sustain are impressive. Thanks once again to everyone who offered thoughts/ideas. |
