So what good are the labels when we have to sit here and guess what the carcinogen is? Also if labels are on everything, they lose all meaning. Finally, when visiting the great Bruce Sexauer a year or so ago, we saw the same label on the front door of the hotel we were staying in...we had no idea what was carcinogenic in the hotel that would cause this label to be used on the front door...so we stayed anyway and so far we are both still good, whew!

If you never smoke your guitar tuners, or sprinkle them like bacon bits on your salad, then you should probably be okay.

Hope this helps.

From what I can gather, just being in the same room with those tuners can be a problem. I think they call it “second-hand tuner proximity aura”.

Yeah, Prop 65 “safe harbor” label - they put this on there and are deemed to have adequately warned the consumer of the possible harm. There’s more risk to not labeling a product (even one where you haven’t confirmed the presence of a listed toxin) than there is to labeling everything.

While this was probably a well intentioned voter initiative, it’s resulted in private bounty hunters suing on behalf of the state and way too many products being labeled. The takeaway as a consumer is that everything will kill you, so nothing really matters. It’s great work for the layers and the bounty hunters, but I’m not sure how much safer Californians are.

Re: 510s - I have a set on a guitar and have for several years and I’ve survived to tell you about it, so I wouldn’t hesitate to use them.

Screws. Or maybe it isn't a drop fit. I am searching to find a rational justification for the warning.

Every time a decision or rule is made you never are sure how it will play out. Then modifications are made to the rule to try and accomplish the original goal. No goals are perfectly accomplished though many are acceptable. Totally control isn't often accomplished.

Looking at the two parts of the notice, my guess is the carcinogenic aspect is from the wood shavings from drilling the holes for the screws, which contain all sorts of organic compounds that may be mutagenic. Talk about covering ones derriere but this is rather silly.

I cannot help but to chuckle and recall the old George Carlin joke:
"The FDA announced today that saliva causes stomach cancer. But only when swallowed in small amounts over a long period of time".

Back to my corner now....

I would not recommend chewing on them.

By the way, which name do you prefer, Aloysius or Dwasifar?

Are you asking me? Dwasifar. Aloysius is just something I suggested Wade might use to pad out his initials to "wham."

The reference is to Elvis Costello, whose real name is Declan Patrick Aloysius MacManus. He adopted the additional middle name Aloysius at a point in his career when he was tired of being Elvis and wanted to go back to his original name.

Actually I think Wade should go further, and be Wade Hampton Aloysius Miller-O'Hara.

Anything with Brass or Nickel gets the warning.
