I like this idea, but some doofus would ruin it by suing the state for misclassifying whatever gave him toenail cancer or whatnot.

Yeah, and when you changed those tuner buttons, you let the plutonium escape. Better get your affairs in order, or at least start putting those stickers on your gig flyers.

In California I have seen these prop 65 warnings posted inside places like Starbucks and Whole Foods - makes it difficult to determine how seriously to take them.

It’s not plutonium, you doofus, it’s kryptonite.

One advantage it has is that it keeps Superman from glomming onto your guitar...

This may help clarify why the warning appears and how seriously you should consider it:

Don’t go touching your frets!

After I signed my last post with “whm,” Dwasifer replied:

Putting aside the tomfoolery for a moment, my guess is that their concern is the finish on the guitar, which you must break to install tuners.

But, sheez.........

Why would you have to break the finish if the tuners are a drop-fit? Not sure I understand this...?

This.

PROP 65 (passed as a proposition by the good voters of California) requires anything that could possibly be carcinogenic to be labeled as such.

In this case, the offending substance is probably brass, since all brass contains microscopic trace amounts of arsenic. Could also be nickel if the interior gears are nickel plated.

I've seen prop 65 warnings on everything from Coffee to Garden Hoses. Absolutely nobody takes them seriously.

I had an ownership interest in a retail business when that CA law was passed. Our trade association sent it along with some advice. Every product that might possibly be sold in CA or to a CA resident gets that warning now regardless of whether or not the product actually contains anything remotely associated with cancer. So as far as informing the consumer about real harms, the law has effectivey been rendered worthless.
