I am in love with the sounds of the Waterloo ladder braced guitars. I'm looking for a WL-S again after selling the one I had. I absolutely love my WL-S Deluxe. It's the guitar for me.

I've had several, and it's just not my thing I guess. A ggod ladder braced guitar has some of the qualities of a wood bodied resonator guitar, which I like. But it's not a tone I look for, or need much.

I like them as well - but many of the oldies were made that way

Ha; old thread, but I’ll add to it. I have come to realize that I love ladder braced guitars.
They are somewhere between an X-Braced flattop and an archtop. Less sustain vs an X but more than an archtop. Less overtones vs an X but more than an archtop. I have a Harmony h1203 Sovereign Auditorium from the ‘60’s. A solid old spruce top; one piece old growth Honduran mahogany back; hide glue and a nicely chunky neck. ~$500 with a pickup installed. Love it. Great for slide, too!

Harmony actually produced a version of the H1203 with a pickup - the H40 "Uno-Tone." Had a Gibson P13 mounted underneath the fingerboard extension. These were only available from 1954-1957 and were at the time the highest price flattop in the Harmony catalog. In 1958 it was replaced by the H55 which had a much longer run. Here is my 1956 H40.

My Larson Stahl is ladder braced and is the best sounding guitar in my cabinet. It's wonderfully balanced with a strong bass, ringing mid-range and lovely highs. The whole guitar fells alive when you play it. The guitar is a bit bigger than a Martin 0.

I really like them. I have a couple, an cheap birch 60's Harmony Stella and a spruce/birch Levin from the 50's. A Waterloo WL-S is at the top of my shopping list come the end of November when the CITES restrictions on EIR are lifted.

I have a 1950 LG1 that I love to play. It's great for blues, jug band and old time string band music. I use it as much as my X braced guitars.

Oscar Schmidt’s Stella and Sovereign lines from the 20s and 30s. They’re what almost blues players then played. Partly because they didn’t cost much. Partly because they had quick decay, were loud and could take a beating. Love them

I you ever get a chance at either a good store or a NAMM show to play some Waterloos, they make at least a couple of the otherwise-same guitar in both X and Ladder. As close to apples-to-apples as you could wish for.
