I'm currently learning "Just Breathe" by Pearl Jam. Getting the fingerstyle patterns down- doing them over and over again. We will see. I usually just learn strummy songs on my acoustic. Trying to learn something more complex. It will take me a while but it is fun trying. I'm thinking the singing and playing will be harder to learn with this one as well.

Super simple, but watching Quinton King on acoustic letter do a comparison of taylor 314 and 414 (I want a GA) inspired me to learn "Waiting in Vain" by Bob Marley. Fun rhythm and chords I dont use too often. Simple, but you can get a lot depending on strum pattern/how you hit which strings. Cool.

Didn't really "learn" it per se, but was working on Jeffrey Foucault's version of the CCR tune Lodi and it worked pretty well!

Made some progress on A’oia as done by Kahauanu Lake Trio. Given the jazz chords and fast paced Hawaiian language, progress is slow, but that is just fine. The jazz chord stuff is pretty new to me, and I know I can eventually make it through the lyrics.

Bella Ciao, Italian folk song from 1940's (partisan version).
Learning it so I can also sing it in Italian, which is not my native language. [Gibberish is, and my Mother tells me I kicked butt at it. Then I had to learn English, which is a bit tricky and I've never really mastered].

I learned two measures of the tune Hana by Masaaki Kishibe. I wish I had the capacity to learn the whole piece in a day. This solo instrumental stuff takes time. 🙄

I’ve been working on Bergen County Farewell by Glenn Jones - check him out if you don’t know him. He plays Fahey inspired fingerpicked compositions, but in many ways is even better. He uses a different tuning on each song - this one is in BF#BD#BD#

I learned “Don’t Let Me Down” in a couple of days. Just the opening riff and chords and lyrics. But enough tompkay it at a jam (though singing it will be a challenge….no way can I hit the notes the youthful Lennon hit).
I am working on Kottke’s “Mona Ray” with my teacher…basically 1-4 bars at a time. I’m in the same boat as Birkenweg42….i never learn fingerpicked instrumentals in a day, or even a week. Some of them take many months to learn, and much longer to really refine and master. Gives me an incentive to stay healthy and live a long time. |
