Wow! 6 years, 19 pages and 285 posts! That's some thread!

FWIW, I didn't much care for that original video either, but for reasons above and beyond the percussion approach. Let's face it, advertising your website on the guitar's just plain tacky! Ha! He also overdoes it to the 9th degree with a overly familiar song that doesn't need it.

In more capable hands and with more original material, I'm totally ok with it. I always enjoy Kaki King's playing and I think she used it to much better effect here, where the technique doesn't overwhelm the song. This is from circa 2004 btw, so a good number of years ago.

Agreed. So many great players out there I love who use it a lot and I too wish I could do it. I never understand those who denigrate percussive playing. I will never forget the first time I went to see Preston Reed live: my face hurt from the perma-grin I had. The same thing happened when I first saw Jon Gomm - and his latest album is easily my favourite acoustic album of the year.

Not my thing, but to each their own. Music is an art and is expressed in many ways for many folks. Enjoy whatever music you make!

No, but I find that people who ask if they’re annoying are annoying.

It just shows a guitar can be one of the most versatile instruments. The style doesn't float my boat, but it sure looks impressive and is very different. I just really need more of melody and harmony in my music to be able just listen. The tapping style can be too shrill and disjointed.

just KILL me.
i'm begging you.

this is the most profoundly BORING crap i've ever had the displeasure to listen to. i have to run after about 10 seconds of this stuff.

then again, i can say the same about many "advanced" and physically difficult guitar techniques.
all flash, no music.
even a clearly accomplished player like tommy emmanuel ... literally puts me to sleep, regardless of what he's playing.

sorry. this stuff makes me wanna cry, it's so bad.
give me neil young stumbling around with 4 chords, ANY DAY.

technique bores me to tears, and i've played for nearly 50 years now.
this is probably not a popular opinion, i realize.
sorry.
it's mine, and it's true.

I don't find it annoying at all. Not all percussion use of the guitar is equal to me and I'd certainly say it can be overdone. Some of my favorite players make both sporadic and frequent use of it and I find it just another layer of musicality in the instrument.

Not a fan, generally....I get bored very easily with some of the pieces I hear. But, there are artists who use just a tiny bit of this technique to "flavor" what their doing without losing melody or beat and I find that interesting and enjoyable when carefully used. I certainly respect what's offered with this style, but, for me, it has to be used to enhance what's there already and not become the main show to reach my full appreciation.

No not at all, I admirer someone who can do that. Stephen Stills did it on a much lesser scale. That is not an easy thing to do. You have to have a great sense of time to handle some like that.

The spice analogy is spot on, too much and the true flavor gets lost.

I don't care for " drumming" on a guitar.
But keep in mind, I hate, hate , hate distortion!
