3 dark sounding string sets.... Comparison.

Stumbled on this good string comparison on warmer tones.
Plus hearing Joe Gore play one of my favorite songs makes this a treat.

For the last 10 years I have used two of his sets:
I use the TI Plectrums on my Goodall Englemann Macassar.
I use Martin RETRO Monels on my 1959 Gibson Country Western.
I have tried the The Nickel Bronze D'Ardarrio but they didn't pass.
But maybe it was the wrong guitar?

Anyway I love my little martin 00-15. I was looking for warm sets and I think i will try these on it. I also like the lower tension Dr. Rares.

I like all strings. Probably TI make the guitar more "personal" even though very dark. But I like the Monel also.

Eye opening video for me. I've never heard the Plectrums, they sound amazing on the Collings, woody warm, full sounding.

Interesting - have never seen that video before, but I have tried all three string types compared there myself.

For me, the D'Addario NIBs sound pretty close to (broken-in) regular phosphor bronze strings, really not a lot of difference.

Being Austrian myself, I wanted to like the Thomastik Plectrums - but they were just way too mellow for me - maybe fine for late night solo fingerpicking, but as soon as you start playing with another guitar player, they make you disappear completely, just too quiet and dark.

My absolute favorites are the Martin Retros. I use them on all my acoustics now (acoustic archtop, too) - they have that super-dry, fundamental, but slightly brush (decidedly "un-pretty") sound that immediately teleports you to a 1930s Mississippi Delta, dustbowl, or Appalachian porch, very old-timey and "real" sounding - just perfect or the kind of music I love to listen to and play; and unlike the Plectrums, those are strings that loud enough to keep up with another guitar and/or a mandolin player.

I think you are right about matching the strings to the guitar. I too liked the low tension TI Plectrums, but I went looking for other low tension strings and now use Newtone Heritage and GHS Thin Core. The Heritage strings sound perfect on one of my guitars but not on another. The Thins Cores were the same; strange on the first guitar I used them on and absolutely amazing on the second!

I’d recommend Newtone strings for anyone seeking a warm sounding string. Easy to buy direct from the maker in the UK.

I wasn't a fan of the d'ad nb on any guitar, just not for me.

I've got a set of the plectrums waiting to go on the lowden. Going from the XS to the plectrum is probably going to be drastic. This guitar is very focused and dry, in a good way. I feel the qualities people have described in the plectrums should fit it well.
