Default "Tommy’s tonewoods" – check out those taptones!

I haven’t seen these mentioned here so I thought I’d share some links. I just came across a series of videos by Tom Sands, a well-respected UK luthier. He talks about various tone woods and taps each wood to show its sonic characteristics. Listening to the different tones through headphones or a good set of speakers is pretty amazing! And Tom is an engaging and knowledgeable presenter. Here are a few examples:

Malaysian blackwood - Wow!

Claro walnut

Macassar ebony

There are many others as well.

I really enjoy Tommy's videos. He does an excellent job talking about the different tonewoods.

I recently fell in love with the sound of Madagascar Rosewood guitars. After having the opportunity to do head to head guitar comparisons (from the same builder) with different tonewoods I always preferred the sound of Madagascar. Even more so than Brazilian Rosewood. As a result, I purchased a Lowden F50 and Applegate SJ with Mad Rosewood back/sides in the past 6 months.

Check out his video on Madagascar Rosewood. Tommy loves it as much as I do https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m2U0vzedc7c

The great thing is that he talks openly about the sustainability of using these exotic tonewoods. Making sure it comes from ethical and well-documented sources so we don't wipe these amazing trees from our planet. And sadly that possibly means not using it on guitars in the future once the existing stock is used up.
