is cedar really that good?
in my search of peoples opinion on koa guitars (which i love by the way) alot of people have said that thier k14 with Cedar tops are the stuff. well, if they are really so good, then why doesn't taylor offer a k14 with cedar top anymore? i know you can special order it with one, but if its so popular then why isn't it standard? just wondering

The 7xx series pre 99" had ceder tops also . And yes I think it's that good!!!! Have you ever seen and old growth ceder big enough to make a guitar? I'd say there running low....

Bob T. seems to get tired of models and simply rotate them out. An example of that is when he rotated the "Cindy" inlay off the 900 series. It is the most popular inlay amongst the users on the TGF. He just said he was sick of making the same old thing. Entrepreneurs can do that...

Oh, yea. The entire line got a facelift when he did that. If you look at the mid-to-late 90s Taylor catalogs, the tops were all colored kind of beige. In 2002, he took the line toward a more white look.

I noticed changes in color schemes as well. I think another reason is the market trend.

I have owned two cedar-topped guitars...a Seagull s6cw and my 710ce. I think cedar gives a tone that you can't get with spruce. Very dark and mellow. Warm and soft. I think it is better for finger-picking than for strumming. To me, the sound is better when not plugged in and I'm playing in a small room. I like to think of cedar as a very personable wood.

Ahem.......cedar is all that you've heard, and more. In a class all by itself. You've read the various reviews here in TGF, but the only way to experience the unique tonal difference is to play a cedar-topped Taylor (or Larrivee, etc.). As for me, I've got two of 'em. Pure acoustic heaven.

In a word . . . WARMTH.
You also have no idea just how sensitive and overtone-rich a cedar top is, either. The harmonics ring more easily and clearly than they do with a spruce top. A cedar top will change your ear forever. You'll fall in love.

Don't know about the cedar/koa combo, never had the pleasure, but I love my 710 - the cedar & the rosewood are just unbeatable for, as DCW says, warmth. My 710 had notes that rang like a bell the first week I played it; my Martin (spruce/mahogany) took many years to get some of those same kind of ringing tones.
