Default Side strips

I read a post on the Martin forum that (1) the purpose of side strips -- linen or wood -- is to prevent cracks to the sides and improve bass response. A lister there claimed that Taylor does not use them, but my 1995 810 has what appear to be spruce or possibly rosewood strips glued to the sides. Anybody have more information about this? My old Guild used linen strips for this purpose, and I've seen other recent guitars -- Collings, e.g. -- that used linen.

I don't know about bass response (sounds like snake oil to me) but they do provide some reinforcement against cracks in the side wood.
