Post VH1's Fan Club show on Dave Matthews...more Taylors..

Did anyone happen to watch that show a few hours ago? While they showed TONS of concert file footage(with him playing his signature Martin), ALL, I repeat, ALL of the new footage, including still photos of posters, concert photos, and media-type candids showed him holding/playing/walking with/being handed a Taylor!

The two predominant models were his 714E and the 914CE we all have known and talked about much. But in a few bits of concert footage, I saw him playing a 914CE with a Florentine cutaway! Everytime I saw footage or a still photo of him with his 714, I cheered out loud! It's good to know that such a talented musician like DM chooses to play the same model guitar as the one I've got sitting less than five feet away from me!

They played more concert footage with sound when he was on the 914CE than with the Martin. But after hearing both in a live setting(through the TV that is) I have to agree with Dave, the 914CE sounds 10 times better live. Full, robust, crisp, well-defined tone. What I would give to see that group of unfairly talented musicians live......

They're really an incredible band to see live. When they're off, they still give a great show, when they're on...wow. Its a treat to see such a tight and talented group of musicians playing such diverse instrumentation all headlined by a truly gifted songwriter. To me, its just icing on the cake that I share a similar taste in guitars

As a longtime DMB fan, it's been fun to watch how his taste in guitars has evolved. In the early years, it was the Gibson Chet Atkins. Dave seemed so comfortable with that guitar that I was surprised to see him get on stage with a Martin. I think he became comfortable with the Martin after his acoustic tour with Tim Reynolds in early 99.

Now, Dave seems to have taken a liking to Taylors, and he has quite a few at his disposal. The 914ce he plays is a beautiful, and seems to really suit him.

I don't know, I'm rambling, but it's been kinda fun and interesting to watch his guitar tastes evolve...

Dave is the man. I've seen him 6 times, and he never disapoints. Of course Leroi, Boyd, Carter and Stefan are amazing also. They are, in my mind at least, the most talented group of musians ever assembled. Getting back to the guitars, I think the fact that Dave chooses to use a 714 and a 914, is a testament to the quality of Taylor's instruments. Even Taylor says their '14 models aren't meant to be strong rhythm guitars. But anyone who has seen Dave in concert knows he jams on those babies(Watchtower, Two Step), and they sound amazing when tested with his unique rhythm style. Build quality instruments and they will perform!

Ahhh, 2000 Taylor 914ce.....one month and counting...hee hee!

You might be surprized at how many artist with near unlimited funds play 300s-500s. Madonna, who we all knowcould have any guitar she wants made her first guitar performance on a 300 series. While not the guitarist that DM is she could certainly afford an more eleaborate guitar. I see many guitarist playing 514s. This tells me that the price of the guitar isnt always what makes it your best. I know several artist that record using 314s. Anyone who doubts how good a 300 series can sound should have the privalage to watch Joe Walsh in action up close. I to applaud those artist that grab a "low end" Taylor and do so much with it. I was asked yesterday buy my friend "why did you buy a 314KCE when you have so many nicer guitars" A nice guitar isnt always about inlay, binding, gold plating, abalone, MOP and such it's about sound. 714 is a great guitar, it doesnt have to be the most expensive to be great. My K14C while not the most expensive of my guitars by a long shot is my pride and joy. I dont think anything can knock it off its pedestal. My mega dollar custom 910B cant even come close. Its sound, all about sound. JW
