Default Show me some bear claws

I keep reading references to "bear claw" in the wood grain. Show me what that looks like! I'm not sure I understand. Thanks! And did the bear claw in your guitar attract you or almost dissuade you? Why? Double thanks!!

Here is a good example of bearclaw in spruce. The technical term is hazelfichte.

I think the idea is that the effect is like the scratches of a bear against a tree. Personally, I really like it; it's like a purely natural wood design.

bizango, thanks for the macro look. NOW I get it for sure. That DOES look like a claw raked across some straight grain, "pulling" it to the right.

And I do like the look! Wonder if my HV GS Mini (on order) will be "clawed"?

Cool Show me some "bear claw" guitars

This is my Martin D-35. I got a special "discount" from the dealer to take it off his hands! Best sounding guitar I own!

At least some look as if there was a branch or some "imperfection" in the wood nearby, and the wood grew around it. Is that what it is?
